Minimum barrel length.
What is the minimum permitted barrel length for a rifle in India?
If this depends on the calibre, doubtful, then the rifle in question is a .22lr.
Thanks.
Mack The Knife
P.S.: Not sure which whether this should be in the Arms Laws section or not.

Mack The Knife,
The Arms Act and Rules only talk about smooth bore guns while specifying a barrel length for the purpose of qualifying a smooth bore guns as being Prohibited or non Prohibited. There is nothing like a minimum barrell length for rifles. However in the portion pretaining to conversion and shortening of firearms,it is clearly stated that no firearm can have its barrel shortened to less than 20".Moreover, no body can shorten a firearm without having a license for it ,ie. for shortening a firearm.
Take care,

Mack The Knife,
I was about to suggest that we don't give our neta-babus any ideas if there is no barrel length restriction in the law, but apparently there is already.
I wonder how this affects some of the Mannlicher carbines that I know are owned by friends of my family in the South with 17 1/2" barrels? I don;t recall their having prohibited bore licenses for them though the rifles were chambered for the very fine 7x57s in all cases.
Cheers,
Mehul

Ah-ha! So this chapter will need to be re-opened.mehulkamdar wrote:I wonder how this affects some of the Mannlicher carbines that I know are owned by friends of my family in the South with 17 1/2" barrels?
I would like to reduce barrel length to 18" and play with various types muzzle brakes - my designs. Yeah, I know it's only a .22lr

Mehul,
You can't reduce the length of a rifle barrel to less than 20'' but if the legth is already less than 20'' as it comes from the manufacturer, there is no prohibtion on owning it.So the Mannlichers are safe, but if somebody panics and wants to sell his,do let me know. Will be there faster than you can say Mannlicher

penpusher,
Glad to see someone who also loves Mannlichers. I would dearly love to own one but they are very expensive in the USA. One of them would be my dream rifle, especially one of the new ones made by Erich Schoder in Germany http://www.eschoder.com/
Hope to have them in India available to Indian law abiding citizens someday.
We'll fight for our rights, without a doubt!

Mehul,
There is a dealer here with a Steyr made rifle in 9.5mm.It has 'M&S patent' stamped on the barrel and has their bolt and magazine. It had some rust on the outside of the barrel and the toe portion of the butt was missing.Would have bought it had he not taken it apart to jazz it up so that he could get a higher price.
I had found a M&S in 9.3 mannlicher ,but turned out the barrel had been shot with an obstruction in it.

Rajat,
Any rough idea of prices for various models and chamberings?
Thanks,
Mehul
PS Some of them, if in good condition, could be sold for good prices over here if someone wanted to export them. MAnnlichers especially the Mannlicher Schonauer sporters are among the finest production bolt action rifles ever made. If you find one in a usable chambering like the 30-06, 7x57 etc just buy it and hang on to it. You won't get a better rifle than that. The 9.5, 8x56 Mannlicher etc are all from the older straight pull series (though they may also have been chambered in the post 1903 M-S rifles, I am not sure as I am no expert) and though ammunition has not been available for some years, recent interest has driven a number of companies to load ammunition for these and the more renowned 6.5x54 etc. If you have a icense and are going to travel in the USA, you could easily get ammunition for them.

Mehul,
RWS currently offers 6,5X54 Mann.Sch. and Norma also had it on their program. http://www.rws-munition.de/de/jagd_patr ... m?navid=10
8x56 and 9,5X57 Mann.Sch. could be handloaded since brass is available
Cheers,
Johan

Johan,
Thanks, buddy. Over here, Aardvark Arms and Superior would probably be the best sources - RWS ammunition is not always available. You know how much I like Mannlichers - if I could find some cheap, I would love to bring a few back to the US and keep them. Let's see how it goes when we visit India to attend Anil's wedding, provided you don't get completely distracted by the beautiful Mangalorean girls there.
Just imagine a custom M-S in 6.5x54 in a Damasteel action with a Damascus barrel as well - now I have something to dream about when I sleep!
