Re: IOF 30-06 Rifle
Nagarifle,
If you see the second pic of today's post, you will notice 3 Allen bolts just forward of the reciever housing and behind the barrel. Removal of these 3 facilitates removal of the barrel with a slight twist. There is a notch at the bottom of the housing where the barrel fits back. That way it remains straight and upright.
I'll post some detailed pics next week for you to understand the mechanism.

Pics of the dried stock after 2 coats of BC TruOil and Finish. Now all that is left is to apply the BC sheen protecting oil.
The burrs in the walnut, although not so pronounced can be seen.

Yes! That's very interesting. Pinched threads are an accepted engineering solution for many automotive and aircraft applications, but that's the first time I've seen them on a rifle! I don't see any benefit for the factory, but it would be a blessing to gunsmiths.Katana wrote:I'll post some detailed pics next week for you to understand the mechanism.
The closest thing I've seen to that is on the early Ross rifles, made shortly after 1900 in Canada. They had a large coarse thread - so coarse it was only one full thread and a partial - that screwed into the receiver by hand. The rear of the thread was cut longitudinal to the barrel axis, and a tiny jack screw ran up from the bottom to apply pressure to keep the barrel torqued in place.
There were several guns designed with tapered cotters or wedges to hold the barrel to the receiver, but they were usually intended for disassembly for paratroopers, or they were light machine guns where the operator or crew might be expected to change the barrel in combat.
