Now that you have bought it. Keep it. Like psm has said....You will get used to the sound (noise).
no friend, when i see a gun i go crazy, when i first tried the rifle the sound wasn't anything to me,i just wanted this powerful rifle.now its like a ''dynamite'',can't help it.got this gun for exchange with .22 rifle.so no question.will plug lot of cotton in my ears with the ear muffs.so now i see everyone has the same problem.as you all know anything bigger than .22 is not allowed in rifle club.i use it in my farm.birds, cows and my horses get scared everytime i fire.will keep using it.thanks everyone.happy shooting.

Prashant: Better ask the wives of those PHs! It's not total deafness, but loss of ability to hear the higher pitched sounds. I don't know that many PHs, but everyone I know who has been exposed to shooting without ear protection, or to loud noises at the workplace, has "industrial hearing loss". Or, as the women with high-pitched voices would have it, "selective" hearing loss. (Yes, there is a silver lining in every cloud.)

Surprisingly none of the big game hunters I have known (who are now in their 80's and above) ever went deaf.
Eating what you shoot is the cure for deafness, unfortunately now nothing much eatable is left after the shot nowadays !!! :D ..

and Dr. you should try firing a different .315 and check the sound level, this since you are saying its deafening.

Jayakumar,
I thgink you need better ear muffs. NOt the industrial type, may be something with electronic attenuation? some people can have extremely sensitive ears...and if your living depends on differentiating a Gr3 murmur from OS, then, for sure you need better protection.
Have a favour to ask, can I have a pic of the TOP ( bridge ) of your 315 action, with a scale kept next to it? I am trying to figure out if a scope mount I have for the No3 SMLE is compatible eith the Indian 315.Would appreciate help

Eljefe,

I have a request of my own,can you give me the dimensions of the magazine well of the No1 Mk3 that you have (Width at the front and the back and the length ) and the distance of the screw in front of the trigger guard from the front of the buttsocket.

The length is the same as the No 1 Mk 3,however there is no charger bridge .Therefore if the scope mount utilizes the charger bridge,it will not fit.Perhaps you can get a charger bridge as well and this can go onto the .315 to enable the scope mounts to fit.

If you have the ones meant for the No1 Mk 3 HT you may have some problem matching them to the contour of the .315.Also you would need the original scope with the rings.

hi dr. try firing a 30.06,it sounds like a roll of thunder. 375 magnum is tops.at close
quarters even an AK 47 is deafening.

Mr. Jayakumar , where are you firing your rifle ? I mean the surroundings. Same rifle / pistol can sounds differently based on their surroundings. Even a Short Barrel .22 Pistol can produce enough noice to make you deaf , when fired in underground indoor range or in closed arena. Since you said when you fired it first time the sound was acceptable to you , so may be its the location effecting the noise and firing in a big open area may give different results.
Thanks and Regards,
Saptarshi

thomast1: How exactly do you suppose that identical rifles, same barrel length, firing the same cartridge, would have a different sound signature???

I have seen few people in India (except trap shooters and some others) wearing ear muffs.
I have been to some training centres of the Army and the Police . Seen the NCC cadets firing their rifles .
Have once witnessed heavy Artillery firing by some Sikh troops. After the demo was over I went up to one of the boys and asked him if his ears hurt. He said "No. My pagri protects them." and added "Thats why you see so many sardaars in the Arty."
Till date I have never seen people wearing anything to protect the ears. See snaps of the Kargil War and you will find our jawans protecting their ears from the sound of the 155mm Bofors by shoving their index fingers in the ears (attachment).

Ignorance is bliss.
I think it's time we changed a few things here. (for the better)

here's the culprit.
These things use the charger bridge of which there is none. You need a drill and tap side mount. Think Williams or Lyman
