Well, I am not a Smellie expert.
You know, most of the guys have a cracking good time with the 155 Gr 308's in their smelly's.That's another reason I slugged it...with 309 groove caliber, I'm sure we wont have a sinuous slide and uneven burn.
Might load up a few with the 308 bullets and see how they do.
Skennerton , who wrote the book on SMLE's, is not very far from here ,and I better get a copy of the book.Have one called accurizing the smle-by Labudda and Skennerton, still reading it-lots of period war office drawings, and makes for an interesting read.Looking forward to the next break, to take the wood out and lets see how the felt/cork/wood bedding is doing.Quite a complex piece of bedding technology in the Smelly,I believe -and doing up the 'Edward G Robinson' character marks-not too many, fortunately. But before that, I gotta take it out and see how she does with some 174 FMJ match reloads-the last time I fired it,it was 1957 Belgian made link ammo, horrible 10 inch group at 200m.I was scandalised
BAsic check done, barrel scrubbed well, parts lightly oiled, stock retaining screw tightened.I hope its enough.Shall post pics taken on range
