Used to have a 12 gauge Ithaca pump that ejected downwards. I am told I used to look ridiculous trying to fire and tap dance all at once
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with downwards ejecting sporting guns, although I'd wonder at the implications of this in military weapons - like when firing on the move and trampling slippery shell casings underfoot.

It'd be best if it were down and sideways, or down and front. If you're part of a team, shooting and moving forward- someone's going to be stepping on casings (however they are ejected) anyway.
