Dear colleagues,
The "Magnummania" is spreading around the world, but there are some reasons depending on the hunted game and the hunting method.
Some explanation:
-here on the Italian Alps chamois is hunted with flat trajectory ammo like 7 mm Rem. Mag., .270 Wea Mag. or .22-250, a.s.o.. The ammo is choosen according to the trajectory, not the energy. Having zeroed in at 200 m you expect to habe the bullet hitting 20-25 cm lower than the aimed point at 300 m. Such an ordinate is enough for hitting a chamois (30-40 cm) vertically across the thorax.
-on the Bavarian Alps (Germany) it is quite common to use the 30.06 for chamois
What is the reason for the difference? Larger game or are the Bavarian hunters more skilled in stalking their quarry?
Neither of them. The human pressure on the Southern side of the Alps is much higher than on the North.
We have a plenty more tourists, city dwellers enjoying the weekend a.s.o. than there.
In Germany a 250 m range is long, 300 m are astronomical, while here, well maybe somebody exaggerates.
Moreover, with the German hunting system, in the plains and the forests they shoot at close range: 100 m as an average, 200 m are often the visibility limit or even the estate border.
Another reason for choosing a Magnum is the chance of facing a red deer while hunting something smaller (roe, fallow or chamois), for which the .243 or the 6,5x57 is marginal from the legal point of view.
As far as recoil is concerned I can tell you that a 7 mm Rem. Mag. doesn't kick much more than a 30.06 0r a 7x64 (I own and shoot all of them, otherwise they become jealous), and that, fitted with a muzzle brake the recoil is negligible (although friends sitting nearby object to the noise).
With due respect to all of you, I think you are still under the influence of the British, well known for using at home the smallest and feeblest legal ammo.
Sorry for the long text. Have a nice day.
