Whenever the GOI floats a Request for Proposal and receives its samples of firearms from foreign manufacturers, DRDO immediately gets its clammy hands on them and comes out with copycat slightly modified versions.. Thats Research & Development DRDO style!

The Chinese also do the same, but their products (the military weapons, not the toys sold on footpaths) seem to be better. Witness the Type 56 clone of the AK47. Is it that they do ctrl+c / ctrl+v for only one system instead of a mishmash as DRDO seems to do?
Cheers!

Notice also the window cutout in the magwell. A perfect example of the "feature" that could turn into a serious liability. Ostensibly its there so you can see when you are out of cartridges. A great place to get dirt in your magwell. So when you cram the next magazine in, in the middle of a firefight, you can push the muck into the chamber, thereby jamming the gun. A simpler way to do it would be to put a clear plastic window in your magazine and a dab of brightly colored paint on one of the coils of the magazine spring. When you see the yellow paint reach the top of your window, you know the mag is empty. Its so simple it smacks of genius. Magpul does this on their Gen-2 and Gen-3 mags.

See the yellow paint on the topmost visible coil of the mag on the right. That denotes that the mag is empty.

This does seem to be a hotch potch, knee jerk reaction from DRDO. Especially since Indian Army is looking for a new Infantry rifle.

Also the 6.8x43mm SPC cartridge is an interesting addition. Popular with the US SPECOPS and some DEA personnel but otherwise has not found any large acceptance by any Army inspite of its purported merits over 5.56x45mm.

The 7.62x51mm being left out is also a bit glaring.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.
