That's an M1 Garand, the workhorse of the US Army during WW2 chambered in 7.62x63mm or 7.62x51mm if I can recall correctly.

The chambering was .30-06, aka 7.62x63. After adoption of the 7.62x51 some were converted for the US Navy through the means of a chamber insert. That didn't work out too well, as the insert did not always stay in the chamber. Not likely to be found in India.
