Wow! This thread is getting interesting.
I have used 375 H&H Mag on elephants, buffalos and a lion.Never did I once question did capabilities of the cartridge.
Like I had stated earlier - "The 375 H&H Mag under normal circumstances is more than adequate to take down Pachyderms. Moreover this is one cartridge which lets you shoot from relative safe distance and that too with accuracy."
I am pasting a few links on the cartridge for the reading pleasure of our members.

Good to finally have you on this forum, I hope you have a nice time onboard.Karnasingh Ghorpade wrote:It may not ever have been th greatest big bore, but it certainly has been one of the most versatile "African rifle" in the sense as it covered a spectrum from medium and large plains game to the big cats comfortably. However, for Buffalo and Elephant, it was an ideal "client rifle" but the PH more often than not preferred the larger bores ,preferably a double, for close in follow up work. With the .375, the client is able to choose the angle and timing of his shot. In a wounded situation there is no such option for the PH, and the .375 was borderline when it came to knockdown power for Buffalo and Elephant. I have used a Sako .458 Lott for Buffalo, and having had to follow up on a wounded once, it felt a lot more comforting than the .375 I had originally planned to use.
"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. IX)

Interestingly, Holland and Holland themselves never called the .375 HH a magnum.Bespoke wrote:It was not the only Magnum at that time we did have .300H&H Mag.The term "Magnum" was coined by British gun makers for advertising like they came up with term "Express",The term "Nitro express" was attached to most powerful cartridges of the Era.

More Interestingly,
There a quiet a bit of .375 caliber's from around that time.
For example:-
375-2-1/2" Flanged.
400/375 Belted Nitro Express (400/375 H&H) .
375 Rimless Nitro Express .
375 Belted Rimless Magnum (Holland's) .
375 Flanged Magnum (375 H&H Flanged) .
The 400/375 was launched around 1905 as .375 Velopex but did not gain much popularity because it wasn't powerful enough.
"Then Holland & Holland introduced in 1912 both the .375 Belted Rimless Magnum Nitro Express cartridge, mainly for use on bolt action rifles, and the .375 Flanged Magnum Nitro Express cartridge for use in single shot and double barrelled rifles." (Holland and Holland Shooting Field Vol. 10")
On their website History Holland and Holland mentions
"Holland & Holland had another major impact on rifle making when they developed and patented the belted cartridge case in 1904. This has led to many famous calibers, the .375 H & H Magnum Belted Rimless being the foremost among them."

How the hell could I have missed this thread. Too bloody interesting!
Walter Bell said. 'A grain of bullet in the right place is better than a million in the wrong.'
All said and done, I would not go on a hunt with a PH who would be carrying a 45-70 rifle. I hold nothing against this calibre but I would personally be more comfortable with a PH who carries a 470 NE on a Lion hunt.
Just my 2 cents, please carry on gentlemen.
