I would go for what my comfort level is because I know I will be able to get my bullet exactly where I want in any given situation provided I stood my ground. So....375 H&H for me. On the other hand, why think of ever shooting "GANPATI BAPPA". this majestic pachyderm.

As a child whenever I use to see my father taking out his Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in 375 H&H Mag, I use to ask him what is it used for.Always the answer would be - an ant to an elephant.

Eventually, I brought down my first rouge with the same weapon.Barring one occasion where I had used a 450-400 3" rifle, all the rouges that I had destroyed was with the 375 H&H Mag Rifle.

Being small framed, I never came into terms with the recoil of elephant cartridges such as 458, 500-465, 475 No.2, 470 and the 577.

When I was visiting South Africa, I saw most of the Park Rangers and Professional Hunters carry CZ made 375s.Whenever I use to ask them why 375s and not 458s , the answer was manageable recoil and the capability to get the job done.

The 375 H&H Mag under normal circumstances is more than adequate to take down Pachyderms. Moreover this is one cartridge which lets you shoot from relative safe distance and that too with accuracy.

well as for me you know what i go for? yes its 105 again, can hit a running elephant as well. now do not joke about the weight etc, for i believe as if one is on a safari, then one takes a tribe of coolies to carry and cook.

i had a friend who got his grandfathers 404 released by the south African police after 70 odd years.

he told me that his grandfather went safari, his first ever, so they hired the coolies etc and of they went, single line, white hunter in the front carrying the 404, about ten collies in line behind him, he was carrying the 404 over his shoulder with the barrel pointing backwards into the line, he had his finger in trigger guard, he stumbled and ten coolies lay dead on the ground. never was allowed to hunt after that.

Must be one of those special .404's which fire depleted Uranium rocket propelled GPS guided bullets(D.U-R.P.G bullets).Got to be careful with those.

Alternatively the rifle may have been an ordinary .404 but the coolies must be those 7+ feet tall specimens made of cardboard known to walk in a ruler straight line even in the forest and the hunter unusually short.

70 years in the jail? That is unusual.Must be almost a hundred when he got out.
