The soon to be released Boberg XR-9 pistol is unique in the fact that it allows you to have a full size barrel in a very small package. This is a pistol that would be very concealable while still allowing you the advantage of the accuracy and muzzle energy (imparted to the bullet) of a larger pistol.
The Boberg has a 4.2 inch barrel in a very compact package.
There is also a possible Boberg shorty/micro, which is the size of a Beretta Tomcat.
It would feature a 3.3" barrel on a 5.0" long gun
Its goal is to duplicate the performance of the larger Glock G26

My first impression is it reminds me of sawn of shotgun! But amazing design to accomodate 4.2" barrel? However, this is just my guestimate, the centre of gravity of this pistol would more or less be just above the the fist, so while the recoil will be nicley absorbed, the gun will kick viciously upwards and to the left. Good at close quarters, but maybe very difficult to hit even the side of a barn door at 25 m. Now ideally, I would love to see the same gun with a 6.5" bull barrel, will develop good power and improve the recoil. This is just my reading dont hold me to it.

It is meant to be a defensive weapon that is easily concealed.
Oleg Volk test fired the pistol in October. He says it was a lot of fun to shoot. Link
As far a accuracy goes, here is a photo of a target he shot at with this pistol. That's three 7-round magazines fired at 21ft.
So at 25 meters, shooting a "minute of bad-guy" group shouldn't be that difficult.

This article describes the action of the Boberg XR-9 in some detail.
It has a rather unique "push-pull" feeding system that is quite unlike the standard Browning tilting barrel, locked-breech action that we are used to seeing in auto-loading pistols!
Recoil is very mild and the muzzle rise almost none. Great trigger, very light magazine and recoil springs. I was quite impressed. At 50m, my group was about 20cm.

I got to pull the trigger on a Boberg XR9 shorty prototype tonight. SWEETtrigger pull for a double action pistol.
I did not fire it, just dry fired it. I am looking forward to firing this when production commences.
It fit my hand very well and I think it will be very controllable when fired as the barrel is low in relation to the hand. The gun balances very well and pointing it should be very intuitive. Because of its unique action, most of the weight is centered on the top of the hand, not forward or back.

Hi XL
This pistol has an amazing design, for a 'short' pistol, it still accomodates a 4.2 inch barrel. Simply amazing. Great pistol for conceal carry and lot of puch.

Amazing how innovation never stops.... this is a fine example of thinking out of the box. Full marks here!!
...just curious to see if a hot barrel/chamber has any adverse effect on the arrangement.

The grips are some kind of high density polymer material so even if the rest of the pistol gets hot, you should be able to at least hang on to it.
One must also keep in mind that the pistol is being sold as a self-defense weapon and if carrying it, one would most likely not have more than one spare magazine.
Unlike a pistol used n competition, one would probably not be firing too many rounds. If you do find yourself in a sustained gun battle that requires firing a lot of rounds, you're in deep trouble and you're going to need more than a pistol anyway.
As hvj1 pointed out, the pistol allows for a long barrel in a very short design, thus giving it a huge accuracy and power (muzzle velocity and energy) advantage over similar sized weapons. In most compact and sub-compact pistols that have a very short barrels, the bullet can exit the barrel before all the powder has finished burning, resulting in a decrease of muzzle velocity and energy (over longer barreled pistols). Another advantage of the rotary barrel is that the lock time will be longer allowing for a fuller utilization of the gas from the burning powder and having the advantage of spreading the recoil out over a longer period of time. The advantage of spreading the recoil out will result in less felt recoil and thus easier and quicker follow up shots.
I also got to meet Arne Boberg and found him a very likeable person. He was, of course, very enthusiastic about the gun and demonstrated its features gladly. I wish him all success in this enterprise.

The Boberg XR9-S is getting closer to production.
Rather than explain the action again, I though it would be easier to expand on this post.
Oleg covers the pistol again with some shots of exceptional clarity that show both sides of the pistol.
Notice the unique way that the cartridges are handled in the magazine.
