I was surprised to see Llama .32 modified to take staggred magazine with buldged magazine frame area ,the magazine is holding 3 plus 12 rounds i.e 6 pus 6 as double colum and 3 on top in straight line ,this was with one of the politician and he was not transperent on sharing about modification but i am sure this was modified to take staggred magazine and the magazine was locally very well made ,the best part is ,the pistol cycle flawless .
ANYONE in forum has seen some thing like this or please share your idea about conversion from single stack to double stack magazine with existing frame.

I am no gunsmith, just applying logic here - In almost all cases the frame will require at least some modification as well.... I would imagine that to accommodate a wider magazine the magazine well would need to be widened to accept the wider magazine.

Cheers!

James,

From your description I am unable to comprehend how the mag follower is able to push out the last of the 3 cartridges? Since the mag is in a bottle necked shape the follower would stop where the constriction starts. The modification would require a fair bit of welding, machining and finally re heat treating the frame. Are you sure it is not a desi or a dara made copy?

Hi Penpusher , I am not sure about dara product but this is very much licenced weapon , i couldnt manage to get photograph but the magazine look some thing like this ,
http://www.ammoclip.com/m/makarov.htm
Kindly refer double stack magazine .
I feel that magwell / gripping area is expanded bellow the trigger part to take wide body magazine but i this is no easy job and need complete redoing of frame.

James....

Hi everyone,
penpusher, the magazine has a 2 piece follower and 2 springs. the arrangement is as in a normal hi cap magazine you have the spring at the bottom and a wide follower immediately above it, now imagine another spring placed on top of the said follower, and a (2nd) narrower follower placed on top of this spring. The wide follower stops at the spot you are talking about, and the narrower follower then moves the cartridges up the narrower area.

As far as I know, in this sort of conversion, this was done to circumvent having to cut the frame at a point above the magazine release. It is cheaper and less complex to modify/widen the frame at a point below the magazine release than above it, in which case the whole mag release has to be redesigned and also the strength is compromised if not done correctly. All this can be avoided by having a "wide bottom-narrow top" magazine arrangement.

An example of this is a hi-cap makarov, although in its case the mag release is at the bottom and had nothing to do with the redesign. Probably only economics played a part in that instance. you can see in the link below:
http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=503
Although if you wan to see the pictures of the disassembled magazine you will have to register.

Also there is a lesser known pistol by Llama(Ithink)(cant remember the exact model name/number) that was in 9mm a double action pistol that had this arrangement.

Anand

Anand,

Thanks for the description. Was able to understand it in one go :D I am a member on gunboards.

Was thinking of this sort of conversion for the IOF .32 pistol. The stumbling block was the mag design. Not any more.

penpusher,
I would like to see what you end up doing with the IOF hi cap conversion, please keep me posted.
There may be a few people who would be interested in this sort of conversion for 7.62x25 Chinese Tokarevs.
Thanks,
Anand
