On IOF and handguns again
Hi buddies
I surfed through the Ordinance Factory website. Actually there is only one site which permits forms to be downloaded and that too specifically for .32 revolver. I dont know whether the other guns are now available or not. There was a 9mm which looked good on net, marked as personal and service. Dont know whether civilians can buy them. Anyway the factory where it is made does not have a website. I had been surfing through our IFG site also and the kinda reviews that I see about IOF stuff leaves me depressed. So guys there are a few more queries, please bear with me.
1. Is there any IOF Factory wherefrom I can get the gun real quick. I heard that there is a lot of waiting time. They want Rs.6000/- by draft and the remaining after they issue some advice letter of allotment etc.
2. In case I am not going for IOF Stuff, in India , which would be a good handgun to ask for from a registered dealer, your choice of pistol and revolver that are available in India. In Bangalore especially, ( Rustum Bana please help me out here), all the five or six dealers are in and around Kalasipalayam, as per the list posted by abhijeet on our IFG site. Rustum do you have any personal knowledge of which dealer would be a good one?
3. Again to Rustum, in bangalore where would be a firing range accessible to public for practicing shots?
Guys, looking foward to your advice
with warm regards

Re: On IOF and handguns again
1. The IOF .32 revolver is available from the Field Gun Factory, Kanpur.
Failing which you can buy it from a gun shop at a premium. Over here they start their quotes at Rs.95,000.00 The revolver costs approximately Rs.63,000.00 from the factory. The last alternative is to find a private party that wishes to sell his IOF revolver. The only way you could expedite the factory process is if you had political clout or know the head honcho personally. I think you should go the factory route, if the buying period on your licence approaches expiry, have it renewed. This is assuming you haven't already done so.
2. All the dealers you refer to will sing the praises of the few handguns they have in stock. The reality is very different. Asian Armoury described a CZ to be in mint condition to a friend of mine in Chennai. He drove all the way to Bangalore to have a look at it and the 'mint' CZ had a badly reblued slide, a home made magazine and a super poweful cocking spring which made it very difficult to cock the pistol. Asking price was something like Rs. 2.5 lakhs. To put it bluntly, if you lack even moderate experience, chances are you will be cheated.
3. See the Shooting Clubs and Associations in India section on IFG. It's the one at the very bottom.

Try http://gunaccessory.com, which has much more information regarding all aspects of gun ownership in India. Both the revolver & the pistol would be available at a place nearer to u, that is, u would not have to travel all the way to Kanpur or Kolkata to get one.
Though AFAIK, the waiting period is more in case of these IOF factories when compared to FGF, Kanpur or GSF, Kolkata.Get their telephone nos. from the IOFB site or the one mentioned above & speak to them regarding the process & the expected waiting time.U might be pleasently surprised because most of the times the revolver is issued on the next day of ur depositing the price in full by DD at the factory counter.
I would not recommend getting a second hand IOF handgun, because of the absurd premium it commands & also bec. of the fact that it would be at least 5 years old.
The 9 mm mentioned by u is not available to civilians.
As far as the cheap second hand alternatives are concerned, the lowest price commanded for a handgun would not be less than 2.5 L, just as Mack The Knife said, though in that case, u would not be limited to .22/.32 Cal. & have options to go in for .30 Cal. pistols too. Here in Lucknow the Chinese .30 Cal. is priced around 4.5 L.

Re: On IOF and handguns again
Hi buddies,
Yesterday I called up Gun and Shell Factory, Cossipore, Kolkatta ( Ph: 033-25574424,25576428, Fax: 033-25574390. Just in case someone needs these numbers:-)). They have only the 0.32Pistol and the rate as of yesterday is Rs.57746/-. They prefer a DD for the sum drawn on State Bank of India. The waiting period is three months.
I also rang up the Field Gun Factory, Kanpur, Kalpi Road, Kanpur ( Ph: 0512-2295100-103). A chap answered and tried to connect me to someplace and it didnt go through. Then he asked me to call the direct line and gave the number as 2295104. I tried again and the person who answered told me that the present cost is Rs.62634/-. Again the process is that I should take a DD, preferably SBI for the sum and then wait for their advice letter. Thankfully the waiting period here is only two months. Incidentally there was a Navarathri offer till last friday, wherein one could go there, pay up and get the gun OTC (so to speak). Missed out on that one. . Anyway decided to root for FGF, Kanpur. Waiting for this festive period to be over to send the DD. Wont want it to get lost in the host of greetings that are flying across India. Fax of FGF is 512-2219462.(for those interested).
Cheers

Glad that u could make the choice. The contact information would be useful for other members looking to procure IOF small arms.
Could u find the address of an IOF near to u where u can procure the revolver from, rather than going all the way to Kanpur?

Guess what? Someone in IOFB saw the 25 rupee laser pointers being sold at the traffic lights! No force on earth can make those revolvers shoot straight...Its the man behind the lathe/CNC/Mill.Turkey and Argentina and Peru can turn out licenced copies of Berettas, Walthers, CZ, but our chief fitters in IOFB are stuck in a time warp and havent heard about the closure of the Webley Scott factory...Why no licence made versions of the CZ etc when we can churn out licence made copies of multi million dollar MIGS and SUKHOI and Mirages?
The common man doesent deserve the technology?
If these business Czars in IOFB get their collective heads out of where the sun dont shine, there's a huge market for quality handguns, rifles and shotguns in India. Subjecting us to this pre mayan ironmongery, I feel, is a violation of my basic right to QUALITY.I hope they go the way of Fiats and Ambassadors, soon.

This would be hilariously funny if it weren't absolutely true. An utterly sad state of affairs if you ask me.
Jordan recently introduced a locked breech 9mm automatic called JAWS to the US market and it has received very good initial reviews though I would like to see how it is received over time. I cannot think of the Jordanians having any firearms making tradition down history and if they could do this, it is a disgrace that the IOF cannot do it.

Re: On IOF and handguns again
Yes Mehul, Jordan has a special forces type for a head of state... I think that pistol is in collaboration with a US firm?
I wonder if there is some way the manufacture of civilian legal products of IOFB could be transferred to private sector?
The possibilities amaze me-even without my post dinner smoke licenced produced handguns from 22,22 mag,25,32, 32 mag?at least one bolt 30-06? Can the smellie take the 30-06? I think it can!!
and a pump -even a mossberg 500 copy sounds good!
Would drive the carzy gun prices don to the ground and no one would want to sell a 1920 junker as -"Webley Saar, best pistol in India" And then I woke up...
Best
