I was looking for this website for some time - had lost the URL - and someone posted a link on the AR forums. Is thisthe silliest handgun in the world? A 5 shot 600 Nitro Express revolver weighing 12 lbs. The manufacturer also offers it in 458 Winchester and there are rumours that it will be offered in 700 NE as well. I might buy one if it comes up on sale used. The ad is certain to read NIB, unfired.

Here ya go, it was hiding:

I had a friend with a 45-70 revolver we used to shoot a lot, the problem with these guns is the barrel is not really long enough to develop all the energy the cartridge has to offer.

You think that`s the only problem Mark ? !! It`s probably just as well that the muzzle energy is down somewhat.........
I would imagine that the powder and load are somewhat different from a conventional .600 NE..........and I still think it`s insane !
Compared to this thing a .45/70 pistol is a pussy cat.

Read about a T/C Contender in 458 Wm years ago-not a cut down version , but handled the full length cartridge.Thought that was a passing bout of insanity, but this?? certfiable!
May have to wear a wrist brace and take an EMT with helo back up on the safari. And I thought JD Jones had all the 'monsters'...

Asif,

SSK Industries have been chambering the Contender and the bigger version, the Encore, in all kinds of hot rodded rounds right up to the 460 Weatherby. Never saw the point of it - obviously there are some who think that I haven't got it. :D

Not only have I not got it but I don`t want it !
I remember the first time I shot a friends .44 mag. Unknown to me he`d loaded the gun with .44 Specials. I was plinking away wondering what the fuss was about until I fired the last cartridge......which was a full-house .44 mag. Snapped my wrist back and the gun ended up pointing at the sky. I shot a lot more .44 mags after that and found them fun. Recoil is stiff but quite manageable. Later I shot a .454 Casull - definitely managable but you ( I certainly ) wouldn`t want to shoot more than a cylinderfull. As regards the .500 S&W ? I`ll try it once. That`ll do me. Don`t want to try a .600NE in any circumstances. I`ve shot a .600NE double rifle and value the experience......don`t particularly want to shoot one again though and can`t say I enjoyed it. In a pistol though ? You`ld have to be lacking much in the way of brain function.

Grumpy,

I've discussed this with you and Mark, but I'll post it here so other members enjoy it. Isn't it funny how most of the monster bore guns are advertised second hand as "shot very little?" I remember a particularly beautiful 600 OK going on sale with the ad saying that the rifle had been shot "just 10 times." But then, it is a question of time before some idiot commissions a pistol in the 600 OK to get 50% more power than he could from the 600 NE. Like you, I don;t want any of it. These guys are welcome to keep their monster guns in their cabinets, nicely polished and cared for. If I want a wall hanger I'll buy a nice painting for a fraction of the price of one of these guns and spend the rest of the money on ammunition for my current guns, and go shooting.

Cheers!
