In 1896 Peter Paul Mauser, designed a recoil operated pistol with 10-round magazine, which was to become a classic firearm. So good was the mechanical system that its design was unchanged throughout its long life. Because of its rather spindly wooden grips it acquired the nickname BROOMHANDLE.
Mauser's famous 7.63mm Broomhandle pistol has one of the best engineered locks of all pistols, the whole thing fitting together without screws, nuts, bolts, not even a pin being used in its assembly execpt to hold the wooden grips in place. The Mauser was always in 7.63mm caliber except for the Special batch made in the First World War chambered for the 9-mm Germany Army cartridges, which could be indicated easily by the "9" carved into the original butt,
Mauser pistol was produced with various barrel lengths, and a short-barrelled varsion, exported in quantity to Bolshevik Russia, became known as the BOLO Mauser. a special version with a selector catch for single shot or fully automatic fire was made, and this was known as the SCHNELL-FEUER. Another version was designed to accept the 9mm Parabellum cartridges made for the LUGER, All these pistols, including copies made by the Chinese & Spanish firm ASTRA, were supplied in a wooden holster, Which was designed to serve as a shoulder stock for the pistol.
Mauser's unique apperance is with the magazine ahead of the trigger. To load the pistol the slide is pulled back & the tip of the clip inserted in the magazine, & the rounds are pushed down into the magazine & the clip is discharged. The SCHNELL-FEUER was made with seprate magazines so that an empty magazine could quickly be replaced.
Although the mechanical system remained unaltered, minor modifications were made, and the early models are highly prized.Mauser 96 is such a well-made pistol that it admired & treasured by Collectors & shooters alike.
Later many models came up such as The Mauser Mod-1930,The Mauser Mod-1896 "French Gendarme". The Mauser 1896 ConeHammer in 6 & 20 shots, The Mauser Flatside 1896,The Mauser 1896 Large Ring, Small hammer & The Taku Naval Dockyard
