Indians For Guns

The Ultra Aegis II (9mm) came in last week and I picked it up over the weekend.

My buddy at our club, who handles sales said that he showed it to a few people while he had it, and they all wanted to buy it........ but it was already taken, heha. I was told there would be a two month wait, but it was a tad over a month, and boy am I pleased.

Handles and shoots very well, Kimber recommends a 400-500 round break in period, I put a 100 rounds of ball ammo. through it over the weekend with no cycling problems or such.

I am looking into holster options now, this will definitely be my carry piece once I start getting comfortable with the cocked and locked concept.

I would have loved a "small of the back" holster, purely for the coolness factor, but I hear it could be a pain while driving, and my next option is "inside waist band". Does anyone have experience with IWB holsters? Would love to hear opinions.

Congratulations Naren. I'd recommend a regular outside waistband holster. I've not used one, but I think an IWB one may be uncomfortable. I'd say walk into a store and try a couple out and see which one feels best to you. After you pick one, practice the draw and safety of the 1911 and get comfortable with that.

Let us know which one you pick eventually.

congrats naren would love to get a compact one but couldnt due to canadian laws .anyway,u got a perfect one .do post some pics of your holster.

Sweet! Congratulations Naren, albeit laced with a good dose of jealousy! Since you have no calibre restrictions to deal with, any particular reason for choosing 9mm? Just curious to hear what went into the decision making process...

Thanks Sharief. You are right in that IWB carry will not be as comfortable or efficient as a strong side outside waist carry. I have a Desantis speed scabbard for my Sig which is right said outside waist/belt carry, not uncomfortable and efficient and easy draw, but I need to have my shirt untucked or be wearing a jacket for proper concealment. Of course the Sig is a lot bigger too. And then, an IWB with a tucked shirt doesn't provide full concealment, the butt/hammer still shows.

Also, I live very close to the MA border, and more than 50% of my travel is to massacusetts where I can't carry. So I guess outside waist carry is still the better option. Have never looked at holsters in gun shops, always ordered them online, but I think I'll do that this time.

Thank you Abhijeet. My father lives in India and is a firearms owner and enthusiast like all of us, and I thank/credit him for introducing me to shooting sports when I was a little boy.

Everytime he visits (which is quite often - about every 3 months or so), we go shooting. The only pistol I had until I got this was the Sig P220 which is a full sized 45. It is fun to shoot but .45 ACP is a heavy round with a decent amount of recoil, and you probably know that better than I do . Nothing he can't handle, but it isn't a lot of fun (atleast for him) after about 50 rounds or so, and he had always wanted me to get a pistol in 9mm. That was the primary reason.

I have also always wanted to get a 9 at some point, the 9 isn't as big as the 45 but still has more punch than the 380, and has a good (I won't say outstanding) track record in self-defense and law-enforcement situations. It is also cheaper and more fun to shoot.

Once the caliber was decided, the next choice to make was the brand/make/type of gun.

9mm being a fairly common caliber, there are a lot of choices when looking for pistols. I wanted something that was compact, reliable, and accurate. The club that I belong to is an FFL (licensed to sell weapons) and they do transfers all the time and I decided to take their advice. I was told that Glock, Sig, Kimber, Para-Ordinance, Springfield Armory met my requirements.

I already have a Sig, and wanted something different, just so I could have some variety (can you tell i'm 25? heh).

I looked at the Glock 26 (Sub compact 9mm), it was a 9, compact, accurate, and reliable and I was almost certain I would get that when I remembered reading about compact 1911 style 9s and started looking into those.

Kimber, Para, and Springfield made these.

I got price checks on the Para Hawg series, the Springfield EMP, and the Kimber Ultra Aegis II. The EMP and the Kimber were very close, Para was a little less money, but the other two had better reviews, so it came down to the Kimber and the SA EMP.

The Kimber was was a Custom Shop gun, had rounded edges for carry, looked nicer I thought, and well, was a Kimber. The only concern was the bobbed hammer, but you can always get the custom shop to put a regular hammer on it, although I think I will be staying with the bobbed hammer.

I also gave some thought to selling my Sig P220 for a Sig P239 (in 9) and getting a Kimber 1911 Super America, but I love my P220 way too much to do that, and figured I could always get a 'real' 1911 later on in life.

So the Kimber 9 it was.

My heart burns knowing that there are so many responsible, safe firearms owners and enthusiasts in India (and elsewhere), who have the knowledge, love, and financial means to buy these firearms but can't, because of the ridiculous anti-gun laws in those countries, and have to pay for an IOF 22 revolver what could get them this very Kimber and a decent Smith revolver. When someone like a Grumpy, or a Rusty, or an Asif, or a Dev, or a Mundaire, or pretty much anyone else here is prohibited from owning the weapons they deserve, it is just plain wrong.

I sincerely hope a day will come when everyone has better access to better toys, and then we'll be seeing some 'real' pictures, I'm sure.
