Single action is when the hammer has to be cocked before the trigger is pulled.

It can either be a revolver such as the Colt Single Action Army, or it can be an automatic such as the Colt 1911.

A double action pistol can either be cocked single action as above, or you can pull the trigger and the hammer will come back with the trigger pull, and then release at the end of the pull.

Double Action Only guns do not have a single action feature, they can only be fired by pulling the trigger when the hammer is down. There is a complicated reason for this, which is because a person has to change his or her grip when transitioning from double action to single action firing.

DAO can be found in both revolvers as well as semi-automatic pistols.

The Sig DAK trigger seems to be an improvement over the conventional DAO mechanism. But a DAO nevertheless.
