World's oldest known revolver
If you'd like to see a picture of the world's oldest revolver, go to "lutzmoeller", then klick on "Lutz Moeller Munition", drop down and klick on "Alter deutscher Revolver / 1636". Enjoy.

Re: World's oldest known revolver
Nope. This one is earlier yet, and pre-dates the flintlock. I am familiar with the Collier, there was a beautifully gold engraved one in the museum in Kabul. Don't recall which king it belonged to.ashokgodara wrote:Hi sir

Try this:
This is the oldest revolver
It appears to be a snaphaunce type lock. It certainly is beautiful!

Re: World's oldest known revolver
Here it is Guys!
The World's Oldest Revolver
The revolver started its history of a weapon smith in Nuremberg, Germany. The year was 1597. It was once a status symbol - with prydekor brass, bone and mother of pearl. Over 400 years later it is well preserved in a cellar in Lillehammer.
The reason we know it's from 1597 is because it is a mark of a horse track on it. It tells us with certainty that it was made by the German weapons blacksmith Hans Stopler, says director of Maihaugen, Gaute Jacobsen.

Re: World's oldest known revolver
Lovely post Two Rivers. Thanks
From what I read once, the British and French too tried their hands at the revolver. The mid 16th century British Snaphaunce black powder revolver was possibly their first attempt. The revolver used to work well when brand new and absolutely clean but a little wearing of internal parts or traces of gun powder here and there would ignite all the chambers and I read quite a few people lost their fingers. The chamber had to be rotated by hand and aligned against the barrel. It was obviously a failure because of inherent instability. Here is a link I found on the net. I don't have a scanner at home or else could have posted a picture from my book.

PS: For gun lovers this blog will be a feast for eyes. Take a tour of a wonderful museum and look at the beauties from India too

Tirpassion, even Colt did not entirely design the revolver in the US. He developed his design on a prototype designed by someone else.tirpassion wrote:So revolver was not invented in America by Samuel Colt. So Colt did not make all men equal

Hand crafted firearms, have always been the province of the wealthy. Since early firearms were pretty much all hand crafted, you had to be an individual of some material substance to purchase one.tirpassion wrote:So revolver was not invented in America by Samuel Colt. I don't think there is much validity to the claim that Samuel Colt actually invented the revolver. I'm actually surprised that a statement like that exists.
However, by mass producing them so even the common man was able to afford them, Col. Colt did help make make men equal, giving them the ability to defend themselves, regardless of their birth, nationality or ethnic origin.
