I know about TWO .32 revolvers produced by IOF.

Now, my question is that what is IOF .32 MARK II, IOF .32 MARK III, IOF .32 MARK IV ??? ( Indian ordinace factories themselves do not refer to such names)

SECOND QUESTION:

So, why do some members on this forum thinking that their IOF .32 (short barrel ) fires .32 S&W Long round??
IT IS CLEARLY MENTIONED ON IOF WEBSITE THAT IOF .32 (SHORT BARREL) FIRES 7.65mm X 23mm (same as .32 S&W) round...

PLEASE CLEAR MY DOUBTS. This will be a very informative post if senior members and experts can give their opinion.
Please also give solid proof if you want to.

NOTE: For information on IOF products, DO NOT REFER TO WIKIPEDIA...INFORMATION ON WIKIPEDIA WAS WRONG and was in contradiction to the information given on IOF official website. so, I have edited some information on wikipedia. Once again, do not give post here based on info given on wikipedia.

Please refer again to the 32 S&W Long Wikipedia link that you posted. It says:

Please note that the case length of the 32 S&W Long is shown as 23.4mm.

Also, note that on the IOF page you linked showing: "Revolver 0.32 (7.65 mm x 23)"

I hope that you understand that metric cartridge nomenclature normally has two figures: the size of the bore (.32 is, in this case, 7.65mm, where the metric measurement is actually more accurate.) and the length of the case, which is 23.4mm, rounded off to 23mm. Thus, the metric definition of 32 S&W Long is 7.65x23mm.

Please also check again the link you provided for 32 S&W. It shows the case length of this cartridge as 15mm, which is much shorter than the 7.65x23mm. Look at the IOF picture again: it shows the cartridges used, and the picture is correct. If you check the two Wikipedia links you posted, you will see from the pictures of the cartridges on those pages that the IOR 32 is chambered in 7.65x23mm, which is 32 S&W Long.

But doesn't 23 mm refer to overall length and not the case length.

You can see two different cartridges, one is .32 S&W and other is .32 S&W Long.

The description given also refers to different types of cartridges for .32 short barrel and .32 anmol long barrel revolver.

So, question remains: Does .32 IOF (short barrel) uses .32 S&W or .32 S&W L ??

It is your cylinder length that will determine what cartridge it will chamber. Maybe someone can correct me but as far as I know all IOF .32 caliber revolvers use the same length cylinder, which is chambered for the .32 S&W long cartridge. The barrel length has nothing to do with it.

For example you can safely chamber and fire a .38 special cartridge in a .357 magnum revolver. This can be done whether is has a 2.5" barrel or a 8" barrel.
Revolvers chambered in .32 H&R Magnum can chamber and fire the .32 S&W Long and the .32 S&W.

People have been using the .32 S&W long cartridges in IOF's revolvers long before the Anmol was conceived.

23mm is the cartridge case length. Most ammunition is described that way; by the bullet diameter and cartridge case length. Overall lengths of a cartridge are specified in SAAMI specs that most manufacturers adhere to.

Conclusion: both revolvers of IOF chamber the same round and that is .32 S&W LONG.

(maybe IOF guys are dumb and therefore they posted the picture on their ammo page which shows that case length of cartridges used in .32 (short barrel revolver) and .32 anmol (long barrel revolver) is "very" different).

So, only the question regarding different models of IOF .32 revolvers remains..

I agree with XL_Target. Barrel length of the gun does not matter with the suggested ammunition used. Longer the barrel, less the recoil and noise.

To my knowledge, we can use short ammo for a long barrel but not long in short (obvious reasons). Have never tried though.
