Revolver or Pistol
I'd like to throw in a question for all u members. What according to u would be a better choice for a personal concealed carry weapon, a revolver or a pistol ? I know it has been discussed elsewhere many a times but I'd like 2 hear ur opinions, especially in the Indian context.
I'm personally partial to pistols.Let me enumerate my reasons
1.Extra cartridge capacity.
2.More powerful cartridges (Here again let's give the magnums a pass).
3.Ease of reloading.
4.Ease of carry ?
Here u go.Looking forward 2 ur participation.

hi,
some advantages of revolvers
1 ) More reliable than pistols (less likely to jam)
2 ) more tolerant with ammunition (more choice with bullet weights)
3 ) even the 32 revolvers in india can use hp's (if you can find hp's)
4 ) simpler operation (no cocking slide etc, just pull the triger and fire)
5 ) even when loaded all moving parts are fully at rest.
6 ) spent cartridges are not ejected all over the place (not relevent in US)
7 ) safer to carry in ready to fire conditon (hammer on empty chamber)
8 ) have both double action and single action
9 ) easier to clean

My selection was 'pistol', but with the assumption that the options were a 'S&W' or similar revolver and a 'Sig' or similar automatic.
If the choice were between an IOF auto and an IOF revolver, I would probably go with a revolver. I have never fired or seen any IOF weapons in person, but from the pictures online, they both look pathetic (no offense owners of these weapons, I feel sorry for you, for having to pay $1200 for these PsOS) and I would go with the revolver given the quality of the ammo available in India.
my 2 cents,
Naren

Understandable Guys,
Would have plonked on a revolver, as Rajat as very corrctly put forth, but am a bit of a Philistine at heart and have been calling IOF and Webley ( and revolvers of its ilk) hatoda's for as long as I can remember.
Would still prefer a PISTOL,assuming its a perfect world!

I am with Rajat on revolvers for precisely the reasons that he puts out so well. Yes, theya re bulkier because of the cylinder and they have smaller capacities and are more difficult to reload. Their trigger pulls are also usually heavier though the first oull on DA autopistols can be heavy as well. All said, the simplicity and reliability of a revolver would appeal to me if I ever had to carry one for personal defence.

A revolver for me.A modern well designed pistol is almost jam-free, provided there is no dud in the chamber, and super accurate. There are single action and double action pistols.
But, more than the reliability issues, which are very important, I love the classic look of a revolver.

Vikram,
I guess the debate about Revolver Vs Pistol will need a separate board!
While you're at it, what would be your choice of revolvers?
I would favour the Manurhin or Korth. second choice a S&W Mod 25 in 45 ACP using 1/3 or half moon clips.A bit fixated on the 45 , as you can see No, I wouldnt want to struggle with the safe containing the Tussey 45!
Again, open to the forum

Jefe,
Incidentally, in a different topic, I happened to have said that a Manhurin is on my wish list.Korth is never out of consideration. Both are fantastic revolvers and very expensive and I like them in .357 magnum. After them, I would like to have a nice Ruger Blackhawk in .44 magnum.Did I mention, a Freedom Arms' .454 Casull with nice shiny buckhorn grips?

Good Vikram,
Korth and Manhurin have a fan following in us, I see...That manurhin which handles 357 and 9mm without any half moon clips is quite an engineering marvel.Been around a while now, but what lines!
The 454 Casull is fine, as long as it doesent go up to a 460!! That's one scary caliber and recoil-the vid in previous posts scared the brains out of me.
A small ish frame in 38 spl(not the hammer shrouded chief's special type) in say 2 1/2 " barrel, with .38 spl + loads or even the Talon type ammo...will make it to my wish list as a back up/primary

Picked a pistol... why? Well, more firepower, easier & faster reloads, better accuracy etc etc.
That is not to say that revolvers do not have their own set of benefits - more reliability, easier/ safer to master/ handle for beginers... But then this poll is about personal choice!
Frankly given the choice of handguns we have at home - Dad's .32 S&W long small frame revolver and my .45 ACP Colt 1911, I'd pick the latter anyday! Of course there's the usual problem of procuring ammo, its cost and vintage/ reliability etc. BUT all said and done - am sure in a crunch my .45 will do the job much more effectively!
That said - for a back up (second) handgun (if one has that choice) I'd pick a small frame revolver any day!
Cheers!

Re: Revolver or Pistol
I voted revolver. The only two handguns iv ever handled in my life were a friends S&W revolver and a beretta 9mm automatic belonging to an naval officer.Of the two the revolver absolutely stunned me.It was in excellent condition and was just so beautiful to look at and hold. The beretta was beautiful but it seemed to me that it was more machine like than the revolver.
Snub-nosed revolvers are easily concealed and tend to be much cheaper than automatics of the same Calibre and weight.Just my two cents.

In India, imported revolvers are in great demand and therefore dealers usually demand more for them as compared to imported pistols (similar make/ condition).M.G. 42";p="4387 wrote:Snub-nosed revolvers are easily concealed and tend to be much cheaper than automatics of the same Calibre and weight.Just my two cents.

Re: Revolver or Pistol
Nobody voted on poor 'not sure' so i just clicked it just to make it feel "at home". Like so many of us guys who havent voted yet. Not sure was a good choice for me. More so because it all depends on the calibre for a handgun of choice. Anyway i always thought a revolver was also a pistol. But I guess we are using the goverment's method of classification in this case.
Speak softly and carry a big gun!
