Sols,

As another member has already pointed out,the import of firearms by private individuals was stopped in 1986.Now only people who have finished in the first 15 at the Nationals in shooting, can import a firearm to be used in their respective fields. Also a person who has been working abroad for the last 2 years and has owned a firearm for the year preceding his return to the country, can import this firearm( max of one firearm per person) on transfer of residence. There are no exemptions granted to anybody from these restrictions/conditions on import of firearms.

OT but what sort of revolver is given by the Home Minister to the top trainee? IOF .32 ??

hi,

since you are in the IPS getting a glock should be no trouble at all, the government of india has imported glock's (and all sort of other hand guns) and they are issued as service weapons to army/paramilitary/police forces.

so thats the route you should take, rather than trying to get one personally.

You could be in any service you cant import a firearm for personal use.
However while serving the gov depending upon the service you are in,you are entitled to a service weapon that will be issued by that dept, while you are on active duty.

I really recommend purchasing accessories in US, such as holsters, bullet proof vest or jacket ( good investment), metal tube batton ( expands and is quite effective), etc. Most of the cities have police stores and they can assist you especially with local laws etc for selling bullets etc.
There are some members on the board who can better advise you.

You should check whether you can get some kind of gun permit or permission for bringing back ammo.

All the best.

Pardon me for being a skeptic about this - would a police officer in training not know the law on firearm imports?

Technically, senior government servants and legislators have always been allowed to buy imported guns seized by customs at Mumbai at very reasonable rates. Again, this isn't known to an IPS officer in training?

Nothing personal, sols, but we do have too many trolls and BS artists signing on here to create trouble. Just need to make sure that you are who you say you are. If, indeed, you would be joining the police department, welcome. We do need firearms enthusiasts from the police departments here. At the very least, this would make our difficulties as legitimate gun owners known to those in the executive branch of government.

Mehul,

At the initial stages of service, very few officers know these sort of things.Infact I can perdict that at some stage in his career he will also try to obtain a PB license.Unsucessfully if I might add.

thank you friends for all ur replies and suggestions.
our moderator seems to bea bit doubtful whether i really belong to the IPS from the question i had posted. i am in my 4th month of training at hyderabad and we are yet to learn about the arms act and other laws relating to firearms. and since u guys are all knowledegeable in this field i thot i would directly ask u which would make my task easier.

as an IPS officer i can have any weapon i need, from a pistol to AK 47 from the district armoury. it will all be under my control. but the fact is that i am a firearms enthusiast and i wish to "possess" somethng of my very own. something which is best in its class and something one could legitimately feel possessive of. thats why i thot of getting one from US.

if that is really difficult what are the pistols available in india and where can one get it?give me the complete details of it.

Mr ngrewal had suggested that i could getbody armor, holster etc. there. even i had this in mind. does getting a body armor etc. require any special permission from indian/US govt?. pls let me know of that also.

Sol,
Get a lic and walk into any gun shop,or the IOF outlet and walk out with a hand gun.
In your case since you are a wannabe cop,try getting one from those that are confesicated and are stashed in police and custom aromuries if it is still allowed that is.

If you are travelling abroad get yourself a Kevlar vest, you might just need it if you land up in the wrong state once you are commissioned.

Best

Sols,

Best in class hmmm ....Janz JTL in .44 Magnum  Seriously, you will have to rely on the second hand market in case you wish to get a 'Phoren' handgun.Be prepared to pay the exhorbitant prices prevailing in India. The Indian govt. banned the import seemingly in 'National Interest' as if terrorists import firearms and those who import firearms are terrorists .This drove up the prices of firearms already imported into the country and also allows the IOF to make a killing selling it's rubbish. The Indian Arms Act and Rules were framed to facilitate the acquisition of firearms by the Indian citizens. In reality, it has served the opposite purpose.

Re. bullet proof vests.I don't think that you getting one across should be a problem.Necessity of service  An SP posted with the CM's security here had got a bullet proof vest from USA and faced no problems. Which cadre have you been alloted?

You have not answered my question about what sort of revolver is given to the top trainee by the Home Minister?
