Analysis of Best six guns
Howdy Gents,
When it comes to choosing a six gun, I have shortlisted the following manufacturers and hope the comparative data on these beauties will help you to choose the best.
My shortlist consists of three manufacturers, these are (in random order)
1. U.S. Firearms
2. Freedom Arms
3. Sturm Ruger & Co.
The parameters used for my analysis were as follows;
1.Barrel Length - Ranking 10 -Being a target shooter, I am more hooked on to the longer barrels,
also the advantage of couple of extra 100 fps. On a scale of 1- 3, 3 is rated for 7 &1/2 inches and above. Between 6-7 inches rates a '2' and below 6 inches is '1'. To me 7&1/2 inches is ideal, so I have ranked the USFA .22 Target and the .327FM Sparrowhawk the highest at 3 pts each. Next would definitely be the Freedom Arms, though they have choice of 6to 10 inches in the Model 97 and lastly the ruger .327, since it has only a 5&1/2 barrel.
2.No of shots - Ranking 9 - The more the merrier. The USFA and Ruger are both 8 shots for the .327 and 6 shots for the .22.The FA is only 5 shots .
3.Cartridge Versatility- Ranking 8 - I prefer a gun with more options. The USFA gun can fire the .327 FM,.32 HR, .32 SWL .32S, the Ruger can do the first three, whereas the FA is chambered only for the .327 and .32 H&R Mag.
4.Styling - Ranking 7 - The closer to the original Wild west, the better. The USFA are almost replicas, the Rugers have made a few changes with the FA ranking farthest down.
5.Accuracy - Ranking 6 - We are talking of factory finish OTC guns and not Match quality weapons. The FA is the most accurate of the three, the Ruger and USFA are almost the same.
6.Stainless Steel- Ranking 5 - Low maintenance. Ruger and FA take the cake, the USFA offers nickel plating, which I am not in favour of.
7.Sights option - Ranking 4 - Here the more the choice in front blade width, windage and elevation on the rear are always welcome for fitting the gun to the Shooter. Once again the FA has more options, followed by the USFA and Ruger.
8.Price - Ranking 3 - Price, in my opinion is placed lower down, simply because, if you wanna have it then you are gonna have and price is not that significant. Ruger leads here followed by USFA and trailed by FA.
9.Grips choice - Ranking 2 - The more the choice of grips the better. USFA has almost 9 different grips, followed by very limited options in bothe Ruger and FA.
10.Engraving - Ranking 1 - Though I would love an engraved gun, it simply wont shoot better than a non - engraved gun. Only USFA offers an inhouse custom engraving which are in a class of their own.
The .22/.22 WMR Category;
Ranked No.1 with a total of 114 pts.
USFA
The 22 Target
Ranked No.2 with a total of 105 pts.
Ruger
KNR 6
Ranked No. 3 with a total of 103 pts.
Freedom Arms[/b
Model -97
.327 Federal Magnum
Ranked No.1 with a total of 135 pts.
USFA
Sparrowhawk
Ranked No.2 with a total of 113 pts.
Ruger
KBN 3275
Ranked No. 3 with a total of 103 pts.
Freedom Arms[/b
Model -97
Price/Model
USFA
The 22 Target Rs 75000.00
Ruger
KNR 6 Rs 28000.00
Freedom Arms
Model -97 Rs 129000.00
USFA
Sparrowhawk Rs 75000.00
Ruger
KBN 3275 Rs 31000.00
Freedom Arms
Model -97 Rs 130000.00

It appears hvj1 is indulging in mental sadism and torture upon those living in India by reminding about availability of all these options. "Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink"

Re: Analysis of Best six guns
Hello Amit and GBM,
Yep, you are right and would love to be in a position to actually try out the revolvers first hand. I am thirsty as hell too, but some mental technique guy told me- "If you want something real bad, then hold the picture in your mind and try to see it in as much detail, and lo and behold, one day it will be in your hand" or something to that effect. Since then, my laptop has a beautifully engraved six gun, which I stare at each day at least 3-4 times, regarding the detail aspect, I keep scurrying around the internet trying to find as much detail as I can...an one day inshallah, before dust to dust, mate I amgonna OWN one of these beauties..
Best Regards

Well hvj1, if you ever come to the US and are in my neck of the woods; I will arrange for you to fire some of the weapons in your list.
I have fired some of the USFA .22 single actions and they aren't too bad. I have never fired a Ruger Single Six so I can't really compare them.

It's always better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it !

Re: Analysis of Best six guns
hvj1,
I was over at one of the local Gun shops a couple of days ago and glanced at their handgun display case. They had a Ruger Single Six (blued) for $299 and a stainless for $399. Both were new.
They also had some Ruger Bearcats (now discontinued). They were about half the size and heft of the SIngle Six, meant for really small hands.

Re: Analysis of Best six guns
hvj1: Regarding your point 3.,any gun chambered for the .327 Ruger will chamber and fire all the rest, even if the manufacturer does not state so, or even discourages it. Prolonged use of the shorter-cased rounds eroding the chamber ahead of the case mouth, enlarging the chamber in that area, and eventually causing extraction difficulties with the longer case.
As to accuracy of the guns, how can you make a determination without having tried them from a Ransom, or similar machine rest?
