Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
What do you think of Glock in .357 cal or .380 acp? The later may be a problem to precure in US as it is only available to LE and Military due to its Low Score (BATF Points) which restricts its import for civilian market in USA. Although the ammunition in .357 may be little difficult to precure and expensive, but it is excellent on stoping power as far as Indian context is concerned. I would have suggested .40 but this ammunition in India is totally unavailable.

Glock in .357 Sig? .357 S&W Magnum (revolver) ammo is available (though frightfully expensive), but to the best of my knowledge .357 Sig (rimless semi-auto pistol ammo) is not available anywhere in India. Would be happy to be proven wrong on this though...

Dear Ahijeet
This is news to me, I thought the .357 magnum is a PB. Jaspal Rana tried his hardest to get an import license for the same and was denied.

Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
.357 S&W Mag is not a PB, and neither for that matter is the .38 S&W Special... the only two revolver cartridges that are PB are:
1) the .38/200 aka the .38 S&W (despite a similar name it is not interchangeable with the .38 S&W Special)
2) the .455 Webley

I believe Jaspal was denied import as he was importing a non-target model and not due to the calibre of the firearm in question being PB. If I am not mistaken several renown shots have imported rifles in .308 Win for competition use, even though they are technically PB as most of them can safely chamber and fire service issue 7.62x51 mm NATO ammunition.
Cheers!

Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
There are no restrictions on civilian ownership of .357 SIG or 380 ACP in the US. There are no restriction on either the firearms chambered for this cartridge or the ammunition.tingriman wrote:What do you think of Glock in .357 cal or .380 acp? Availability of the ammunition, however, in the current ammunition crunch is not as good.

Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
Like Saahil and Ngrewal have suggested, CZ 83 in 380 ACP is an excellent choice. They can also buy a Glock in .40 S&W and special order(long wait) an IGB barrel in 380 ACP from Sporteque.ca. There's also has an aftermarket .22 LR conversion kit for Glock by Advantage Arms.
If they like revolvers, they can get them in either .32 H&R Mag or .327 Fed Mag as these will chamber the local .32 ammo.
I agree with Ngrewal about importing a handgun and a rifle/shotgun instead of two handguns. While handguns are great for concealed carry, shotguns/rifles are excellent for home defense.

Xl_target, Tingriman was talking about the availability of a Glock pistol in 380 ACP. Its unavailable to civilians in the US as it doesn't have enough points to meet the minimum import score set by ATF.

Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
Very much NPB. It is a popular misconception that PB/ NPB classification has anything to do with ballistics or "power", the restriction exists merely to restrict ownership of firearms which can chamber "service ammunition". The logic? To prevent pilfering of govt. ammo stores (doesn't work) and to ensure that even if a service firearm is "captured" the criminal/ opposition cannot use it against govt. forces as they should not be able to procure ammo for it (again doesn't work).hvj1 wrote:Hi Abhijeet

Re: Suggestions for which pistol to import
ALL i can say if you want to do TR and bring handguns etc. do your homework in two areas.
1/ availability of ammo for the arms?
2/ customs/licenses etc.
there are plenty of good info on the forum now to make a good judgment.
all the best
