Gun Manufacturers Smith & Wesson have unleashed their newest revolver: a monster .460 calibre handgun which they say is 'great for a back-up gun, or for hunting'.

Named the 'Backpack Cannon', the gun was unveiled in Las Vegas on Monday at the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade show, the largest gun show in the U.S., which around 60,000 gun fans attend every year.

The cannon - officially called the Performance Center Model.460 - features a three-inch barrel, high visibility sights and synthetic shock absorber on the rear of the handle, as well as a massive chamber to fit the gigantic .460 calibre rounds, which are some of the biggest and most powerful bullets in the world.

A proper monster, Shaji. I want one!

I wonder how heavy it is and how easy to carry it.

Thanks for sharing.

I would like to try shooting that thing! I can't imagine what practical use it might have, but then again, I can't say any of my other guns have a practical use, other than that I want them.

I confess, however, that the first picture did remind me of something:

American gun makers always had this obsession for producing the proverbial "most powerful handgun on earth." But, in the three inch barrel version,I doubt how much of practical use this six shooter will have in the wild. To make full use of the powder and ammo this monster should use a much longer barrel or else it will remain as just an upgrade on the Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull revolver. My personal view entirely.

Thanks for the post Shaji.

I suppose if you're going into Bear country, you would want one of those. I can see the three inch version selling well in Alaska
I'd rather have a shotgun with slugs but they are a pain to carry around.

Navi I think you are talking of a report that claimed that a man placed the thumb of his non firing hand (in an attempt to have a better two handed grip) between the cylinder and barrel and the hot escaping gas burnt his thumb. Or is it another incident ?
