What and why?

Post by winnie_the_pooh » Sat Jul 28, 2012 10:44 am

It is the third one from the top http://www.ionbondguncoatings.com/samples.html

Seems to be a 1911 slide but any information on why it looks like this?

If you are talking about the one with the modified serrations on the slide, my guess would be it is meant for someone with big hands and thick fingers (or gloves?). Someone who might find the normal serrations hard to grip tightly. That looks like a "race gun" meant for competition. They usually have the large modified magwells and extended beavertails.

I was taught to use an over hand grip on the back of the slide so my hand butts up against the rear sight. This provides a positive grip and prevents your hand from slipping on an oily gun or a wet gun. I very rarely use the serrations to rack the slide on an automatic.

The CZ type slide (sixth photo from the top) with its rails inside the frame can also pose a problem for people with large fingers as less of the slide is exposed above the frame. The method I was taught removes the need to grip the serrations to rack the slide. I can post a photo of the method if you're interested.

It is a 1911 slide with metal machined off to make it lighter without (hopefully) compromising the component strength.

Bowman,
The fourth one from the top definitely falls into the category you described.

As far as the third one from the top goes, there are many other ways to remove weight from the slide than just machining away the serrations. What they have done wouldn't really remove that much weight from the slide. On the other hand, you might be perfectly correct. Hard to know what the owner wanted without talking to him, I guess.

Oh and Winnnie, the reason for the extended magwell is so you can make faster mag changes. You could most likely do it without having to look at the bottom of the gun when inserting a fresh mag.

Here is a link to a place that offers slide lightening that has a somewhat detailed explanation:

http://www.gansguns.com/lightening.html

Basically, these guns belong to people who have a lot more extra time and money than I do!

Hi winnie_the_pooh,
Thats is a 1911 slide with lightning cuts. These cuts are made to reduce the weight of the pistol. These kinds of pistols are used in IPSC shooting competitions... Thank you...
