I think I shall try to sock away some money. If such a day comes, we may well see the day of $69.95 Mosin Nagants again. The idea of being able to get cheap M1891a makes my mouth water, especially a nice Sestroryetsk! I have always wanted one from that arsenal.

Yes, the Russians do hold on to stuff! There have been quite a few batches of K98 Nazi Mausers that the Bolsheviks squirreled away and that have been just dumped on the market over the last several years. They not only stockpiled M 91/30s, but M98s in 7.92x57 as well.

Note: Reading the "legalize," I am understanding that the rationale behind banning the import of, say, M91/30s is so that they won't fall into the hands of urban terrorists or bank robbers -- especially, those with a bayonet. A true threat to public safety, no doubt. It boggles my mind, how politicians can spew such bunkum and the public swallows it without straining.

Agree Timmy and this reminds me of an anecdote I heard long time back regarding a comment made by a Russian pilot.

According to him "you (Americans) make planes like ladies watches, just a small bang and they stop working. Russian plane is like a tough men's watches. If it stops working then you give it a hard shake and its back ticking again''

There might be some generalization in this but yes it is true to a large extent of Russian military hardware.

Where Russian engineering excels is in terms of simple reliability and ease of manufacture - scalability.

You might be correct in seeing some of John Browning's genius reflected in the Grach.

I agree XL. This is how the Russian weapon design philosophy is; take a proven design and make it a step simpler anr a step more rugged. The AK and Sturmgewehr, SVT 44 and Geweher 43, Makarov and Walther...pretty much simplified adaptations that work beautifully in their own conditions.

I hear that our own Special Protection Group has also replaced the Glock 17 in favor of a new arm - FN Five-seven.

Really? the 5-7 is a great weapon.Anybody on the forum shot it yet?

A fine pistol maybe yes, but expensive definitely. The FN design was evaluated as superior to existing systems by NATO but it was not adopted probably because of cost, ammo availability and other such issues.

Perhaps some investigation can be done as to how many have been acquired by India and deployed for what applications (VIP protection probably)?

Ammo is very expensive, like 30 to 35 $ for 50 rounds!!!!! Presidential and prime minister's guards use them it seems.
Really, this reminds me of microsoft's monopoly....
