Nice shotty Ranachk
What is the choke constriction on this one? Is it a family heirloom or have you recently acquired it? How does she shoot?
Cheers!

The Remington 870 has dual action bars built into the fore end tube assembly. The magazine cap assembly is the last part that is screwed on (after the barrel is slid onto the fore end tube assembly). The magazine cap is what keeps the barrel in place.
The shotgun shown has a single action bar and the magazine cap to barrel interface is different.
The Remington model 31 was produced from 1931 to 1949

The Remington 870 was the fourth major design in a series of Remington pump shotguns. John Pedersen designed the fragile Model 10 (and later the improved model 29). Working with John Browning, Pedersen also helped design the Model 17 which was adopted by Ithaca as the Ithaca 37 and also served as the basis for the Remington 31. The Model 31 was well-liked, but struggled for sales in the shadow of the Winchester Model 12. Remington sought to correct that in 1950 by introducing a modern, streamlined, rugged, reliable, and relatively inexpensive shotgun, the 870 Wingmaster.
Sales of the 870 have been steady. They reached 2 million guns by 1973 (ten times the number of Model 31 shotguns it replaced). By 1996, spurred by the basic "Express" model, sales topped seven million guns. On April 13, 2009 the ten millionth Model 870 was produced, and the 870 holds the record for best-selling shotgun in the history of the world.

"what is the difference between Remington 31 and 870..." They are totally different designs. The M870 has a pivoted locking block in the bolt that locks into a slot in the barrel extension; the M31 locks with the upper rear edge of the bolt into a corresponding notch in the top of the receiver, much like the Winchester M12. There were three variations of the M31, 1931 Series,1934 Series, and 1941 Series. All were sturdy and reliable guns. Changes were mostly in the trigger group, though some other parts had to be modified on earlier guns to accept 1941 Series parts. Since I prefer doubles, I never kept a Remington M31 for long, though now I wish I had. It was a good gun. Cheers.

Great shotgun you own, Ranachk. As mundaire asked, is it family owned or did you purchase it?
