The British will remain British (No offence intended). Only they can call a £30,000 Purdey shotgun cheap. What I like is the contradiction in the article saying "Across the country, builders and plumbers and IT workers are buying guns and joining shoots. Shooting associations have seen rises in membership and shooting schools are reporting large numbers of new members, including an entirely new category of pupils, otherwise known as women." And then calling the new Purdey cheap.

If I had £30K to spend on a gun, it certainly wouldnt be a purdey, even though at £30K a purdey can be considered a bargain.

I dont know where they are getting their information, but hunting is certainly not becoming popular in the UK.

It is nothing but a marketing manoeuvre aimed at the vain and the gullible to rid them of their money in return for stamping the haloed name of Purdey on a gun not made by them. Perugini and Visini of Italy make these guns and Purdey proofs them and stamps their name. You regularly see the P&Vs for sale in UK at 7500GBP and over in NIB condition.You stamp Purdey's name on them and the price is up by nearly 22,000 GBP! You tell me what sense does it make.

To their credit, Purdey do not hide this fact from customers.

M24, 30,000GBP is a lot of money for most British people.A great majority of guns are of not very expensive brands and Berettas, Brownings and Mirokus dominate the scene. Yes, there is a thriving market for high end guns and there is no hiding about it.

You`ld find it difficult to find a new P&V in `deluxe` specification for £7,500.......but you are still paying a hefty premium to have the Purdey name stamped on the gun.
To be fair, we shouldn`t be too critical of this modern trend for cheaper models being produced by an outside contractor as it was common practice years ago. It`s a new departure for Purdey but other top companies used to have guns made by Birmingham trade makers. All the H&H boxlocks and Dominion models were all built in Birmingham for H&H for example.
The situation also appears in reverse so to speak as, for example, the top-of-the range Berettas - the SOs - are made by Famars ( Abbiatico & Salvinelli ) for Beretta. The SO is an exclusive design so you can`t buy an A&S `SO`...... but I`d still rather have an A&S sidelock O/U.
Damned if I`d pay the premium to have `Purdey` stamped on a P&V though.......If I wanted a P&V O/U I`d buy a P&V.
The number of shotgun and firearms certificates issued in the UK has been rising steadily for many years and more people do actively engage in both clay shooting and hunting than in the past.
