How`s this for a coincidence ? A couple of weeks ago I bought a nice W.H.Pollard ( London ) hammergun. Plain action, steel tubes, nitro proof with the barrels reblacked and the chequering recut. A few days later I found another - very similar but with an engraved action and fences. The asking price was too much so I didn`t buy it. Last week at auction there was a third. Lightly engraved action, a little lighter in weight than the plain gun. different locks but again with reblacked steel tubes, recut chequering and nitro proof. This gun I managed to buy the gun for about half the cost of the first.
I think that you`ll have to agree that they make a handsome near pair.

By the way, the reddish looking marks on the lockplate of the plain gun are something to do with flash photography and aren`t actually there.

By UK standards both guns were very well priced .... even though the plain gun cost almost twice a much as the partially engraved gun. They have the added benefit that neither gun needs any work at all. In the US, where both guns are headed, they are worth considerably more.
To view Purdey guns look at Purdeys own website and dealers such as Litts and Chris Potter Guns.

Grumpy,
Beautiful guns. Mutt and Jeff, though, is a somewhat infelicitous description of two very beautiful pieces.
My congratulations to the owner in the USA. For everyone who decries American gun owners there is an example of someone who appreciates such craftsmanship and is willing to go to lengths to import them from overseas.
Thanks for posting!
