Proof Mark Help

Post by snIPer » Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:28 pm

Hi,

I just happened to come across a 12 bore dbbl today - the markings had
CHOKE
182
written on both barrles
Does it mean that both are improved cylinder.
Thanks

Grumpy may be able to help.... are you sure there are no other markings?

Sniper,

They are not proof marks.Proof marks tell us about the pressures the gun can deal with like 'Black Powder or Nitro prooved etc.

Re the gun in question, what make is it? English or continental?

It must be 18.2 and not 182. It does sound like Improved Cylinder. I will wait until our real experts chip in.

Best-
Vikram

18.5 mm or 0.729 inch is Cylinder
18.3 mm or 0.720 inch is Improved Cylinder
18.1 mm or 0.711 inch is Modified Choke
17.9 mm or 0.702 inch is Improved Modified Choke
17.6 mm or 0.693 inch is Full Choke

best,

Rp.

Finally got a clue -

http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtop ... 9ad236db69

The CHOKE 182 denotes a bore size of .716" [tight side of 12ga.],
