Old Shotgun & Side Clips

Had some free time available recently and ended up cleaning and taking pictures of one of my old shotguns that has not been used for many years. This old lady has side clips and I was wondering if any of the current or past Indian manufacturers ever made guns with side clips.

Does any one know what is the purpose of side clips, I was looking for this information and remember reading on some other forum that side clips protects the barrels from lateral stress.

I used a few Indian DBBL's during my years in India but don't remember if any of them had side clips....

The side clips can be seen on the side of the actions.

That is one clean gun...

So what are the side clips for?

Glad you guys liked the gun.

As mentioned earlier, the only thing I could find out was that it reduces lateral stress on the barrels. I don't see them on any of the newer guns, so it must be a manufacturing practice that has been discontinued.

Since the thrust on the breech face of a SxS is not symmetrical to the bolting, there is a sideways bending component as well. The sideclips, if tightly fitted, will counteract and contain this movement. Due to stronger steels and tighter tolerances, plus added cost, you only rarely see them on modern SxSs. Cheers.
