In many places in the world, inclusive of USA where rifle hunting is not allowed due to thin forest close to habitation, scoped shotguns are used ( Deer barrels ) with Iron sights or scope sight to shoot deer and boar with Sabot slugs or other kind of 12 g / 20 g slugs.
Such barrels are usually rifled.

Thank you Navi for a very interesting link.
I immediately fell in love with the MTs-255 revolver shotgun.
My question is , since it has a revolver mechanism and not a closed airtight chamber wouldn't the sparks be too close to ones eyes? What kinda 12 GA ammo would it take?
best,
RP.

These are custom made guns, starting at USD 20 K and up
it is unlikely you will find them in our neck of the woods.Putin owns a few, there afew pics of his guns on SGW.
Here one will usually find Baikals model IJ 12 & 27 in O/U and IJ 58 in SxS,another very popular Russian gun if one gets lucky would be the Toz 34 O/U

This info is for bragging rights and off course drooling and dreaming to have one additional gun in ones safe. Who knows a lucky Indian diplomat or a high ranking officer was gifted one by the ruskies. Also, I was reading Marshall Zhukov and his ilk had looted many pairs of "bespoken" guns such as Holland and Holand etc during Second world war.
Cheers

This revolver shotgun business seems to be a bit risky. A gun is fired too close to the face and this could prove rather dangerous.
A cartridge for this kind of gun would have to be a full metal case cartridge and then too it is not very safe.

Some very interesting guns. The revolver shotgun would be no more dangerous than a revolver, i.e not. Yes, you'd get a bit of blow-by, but that's well ahead of your face, unless you're the worst king of stock-crawler. When the Russians occupied Suhl in 1945, they immediately ordered Merkel shotguns for their high-ranking officers. Was told by an old German gunsmith who was there, that a Russian colonel was supervising the building of Zhukov's O/U, and twice smashed the completed gun because of some (imagined) flaw; but more likely because he could, and wanted to make an impression. Cheers.

Here's a look at another revolver shotgun from the beginning of the last century. Unfortunately the whole text is not accessible. I believe it used a spring, which you had to wind, to rotate and index the cylinder after a shot was taken.
