Your question is unclear, what exactly are you asking here?

What I am asking is that I know you can get a sporting rifle if you state your "need" sport shooting, but can you get a shotgun if you state sport shooting as your "need"?

It's not guaranteed that you will be granted a license, even if you are a member of the NRAi or any other shooting club. It's really how the LA feels the need, as per your profile. Therefore I suggest you apply for a shotgun , if you want that, as a sporting need and read up articles on the subject(easily available on Google) . You will need to know your subject for the interview with the LA eventually.

Shotguns are used for the shooting sports disciplines of Trap/ Double Trap/ Skeet. So yes, you can own a shotgun under the sports category.

Needless to say, what demands your local licensing authority places on you to "prove" your "need" in terms of shooting sports can vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
