In rural Gujarat and Rajasthan, I have seen muskets loaded with guar seeds (cluster bean) when there would be a shortage of lead shot.

Rock salt? Not yet!

Katana, could you elaborate on the bean loads? Are they used to shoo away animals ? I don't see beans causing any serious damage when used in lieu of lead.

Guar seeds are really hard. Google 'cluster beans' and you might a picture of what they are. Most farmers in the western dry areas grow them. It's a rain fed leguminous crop.

They are about the same size as lead shot.

Usage would depend on the person using it. But by no means is it to be taken lightly!

There is an elaborate test report on the net on whether rock-salt is effective for non-lethal deterrence in a shotgun. Please find it here:

Turns out that it is totally ineffective.
