SBML: Single barrel muzzle loading, could be any matchlock, flintlock etc. but could be a shotgun too.
SBBL: single barrel breach loading, could be any shotgun.

Typical babu lingo :deadhorse:

Chandrashekhar,

SBML= Single Barrel Muzzle Loading

SBBL= Single Barrel Breach Loading

Normally the word 'gun' is appended to it,signifying that the license is for a shotgun.The difference is in the way they are loaded.An SBBL gun will fire a cartridge the other does not.

Katana,the classification is not as illogical as you think it to be.

Care to explain this?

That would be a muzzle loading shotgun. I've seen some examples, though never that has been fired when I've been around :lol:

I think katana is talking about the various types of Muzzleloader guns. The percussion lock (direct ignition of load by percussion cap), the flintlock (indirect ignition of load by flint stones/frizzen produced sparks on primer powder) and matchlock (ignition of priming powder with a burning wick which in turn ignites the load). I shoot all these three types (pistols only). There is another type known as wheellock which I have never shot and hence ignorant about it's mechanism.

Was a bit confused about how it being a matchlock or a flintlock mean that it is not a shotgun. As far as muzzleloading shotguns go,they are still being made in Rajasthan and are quite common in many parts of India. They are all caplocks though.

In Rajasthan, they make flintlocks and matchlocks also. But I believe that they are for the export segment. Please see the following site for example
