Hi all,
Any remedy for rust damaged 12 bore barrel. When i went back home after almost 8 month, found all the three 12 bore badly rusted inside the barrels. After cleaning the damaged was there to be seen. Refilled cartridges have been used extensively in the past. Pl. suggest any remedy other than changing the barrels. All are Indian made.

refilled/reloaded cartridges in the Indian scenario would almost invariably be corrosive. The primers too would be potassium-chlorate based which is highly corrosive. The residual fouling/sludge from firing even a single cartridge will result in active corrosion if not attended to at the earliest. The chemical composition of the fouling is NOT oil soluble so cleaning with oil will not be very effective. However, it is water soluble so the cheapest and simplest bore cleaner would be hot water...better if soapy. You could also use Hoppes No9 water-soluble formula.

Once dry- oil as you normally would.

For bores that have been corroded lightly, you could try pulling a fine oily steel-wool through the bore...or in extreme cases run a drill powered bore polishing/honing bit (imported) or brake cylinder hone. Of course that will polish out a lot of metal and enlarge the bore....not a good idea unless you have a barrel with thick walls and dont mind buggering up the choke. As long as you can clean/polish off the rust and gunk, you may just leave the pits. Just keep the bore protected when you leave the guns unattended for long periods.

regards,
cc

Thanks Cottage Cheese,
I will try the steel wool as i don't know or have the powered bore polishing bit or brake cylinder hone. If I may ask are these kits expensive.
yes you are right the guns function as before its only the many pits that sadden me.

I don't know of Indian manufacturers but here's the more common one:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0/k= ... arrel_Hone

Be aware that you WILL need to use the Flex-hone oil if you plan to use the flex hone.

...it'll have to be imported though.

Immediate after my shooting session(Just approx.10 shoots used, self load and company),
dismantled the barrel and it was cleaned wth warm water, nylon brush.

After well dried out i put light cote of petroleum jelly to the bore.

Very light thin cote all over metal parts and store it,as indian gun it gets rust very badly.
But my friend's gun Astra(Spain) does not behave like mine,i don't know the metal properties.

Every three months,I do the cleaning irrespective of usage.
Mine is Indian made,NSA,SBBL(year 1969)

Regards
R.Mani

mani, i think its something to do with the metal composition.
in my case, cottage cheese was right as he had pointed out that the powder available are mostly corrosive, refilled cartg have been used extensively in the past.

RamMani and TargetShooter how are you re-loading shotgun shells in India. very curious about the process and components being used.

Mostly its blackpowder and ML percussion caps and appropriate ML ball sizes. Crimping tools and rudimentary reloading equipment is still fairly common since the arms act allows reloading as long as its personal and not for commercial purposes. Black powder, cap & ball used to be issued against 12Bore SBBL/DBBL licenses. This has been curtailed in most places in recent years.

MOA,
Its very easy process not requiring much skill but only being carefull. Primer cap and powder are available in gunshop. Lead shot too. or you can prepare the lead shot as per your req gauge. As a teenager i used to refill myself just for the hack of it. Now idon't do it.
MOA pl. keep in mind we are discussing 12 bore. Not those high velocity cartg.
All the best.

Cottage cheese,
As you know WE Indians are very proficent JUGAARU, I know there are people who are very happy even with the aloobom powder   . They are right upto some extent as the 12 bore cartg are now expensive and ofcourse you know the reliability our kf/astram. And you definitely don't want to shoot a dove or crow with expensive Imported cartg.
