i; have 12bore walter locke. england easy to carry while in the field. but carrying it in a vehicle ; if need be not easly manouvered around barrel length 28inches .butt original walnut. what should do make any modi fications for this beauty.; or leave it in its original condition ;cause iam afraid of spoiling it inthe process.plus the originality will be gone. please advise me all members of the shotgun lovers community . a shot gun ;over the years in my life ;have discovered that is the only best weapon to use in the whole game of defence ;personal home defence and multi-purpose use; god knows why i personally feel that or other members also; views please are requested . thanks and regards. for everyone . hornet .

Almost all the gunpowder is said to be burnt within around first 16 inches of shotgun barrel. In view of this fact, a shotgun barrel longer than 16 inches does not serve any ballistic purpose, like increasing the velocity of shots. Longer shotgun barrels are usually made for creating a balance/steadiness in shotgun.

If you decide to shorten the barrel, the "originality" and also the chokes if any in the barrel will be lost. The loss of chokes will cause the shots to spread faster(indirectly reducing the effective range). Loss of chokes should not effect performance of slugs.

If after considering all this, you still decide to shorten the barrel, make sure it is not shortened less than 20 inches. A smooth-bore barrel, anything less than 20 inches is considered as a prohibited bore.
