I dont know if they made Shotguns? AFAIK Simson made handgun, rifles, machine guns and sub-machine guns...

[/quote]

Yes, they made shotguns as well. The whole gamut of sporting guns, from .22s to SxS double rifles.

Here you go. This one belongs to my father. It's a Simson hammerless .12 bore boxlock with a cross bolt and pin type load indicators and choke in the left barrel. The shell ejectors are single selective type. Barrels are 32 inches.

I've attached a pic of the proof marks. If anyone can decipher them, all the better.

He must have purchased it in the late '50s or early '60s, and it has seen a fair amount of shooting.

Very nice SxS boxlock Katana with sideclips and cocking indicators, also looks like in good condition. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting, the rib markings are different.

Your gun has "Simson, Suhl (Thuringen)".

My gun has "Simson & Co, Suhl Waffenfrabiken"

I've seen some shotguns with the same markings as yours' in India. Somehow, people still prefer to buy second hand ones as the one that my father has. Maybe its a personal liking but the oft heard comment is that they are hardier (sturdier built?). Anyway, this is just an observation from my end.

While the shotgun indeed is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. to banged up name guns well past their prime and in many cases beyond restoration.Any offense taken is neither meant nor intended and is purely incidental

Can someone please tell me how to ascertain whether an old external hammer shotgun is nitroproof or its only black powder.

TS

Check the proof marks. If you can post pictures of the barrel flats and the water table, some one will be able to help.

The address on the Rib is a Simson & Co Suhl (Germany) , looks like the action has been sourced by Simson from Ferlach Austria as the gun has Ferlach & Prague proof marks. 20 gauge with 28 inch barrels.
