Best Quality Indian Made 12 guage shotguns
I agree penpusher, but on an average of percentages this was a single mishap in about 700 to 800 shots I would have fired from Munger guns so far when nothing else was available.
Not a bad average. Jokes apart Giridhari Lal's guns are fair. A very close copy of BSA.
This isolated incident could have been my mistake. I was running while loading that buckshot. Maybe I had not snapped the breech close properly.

Re: Best Quality Indian Made 12 guage shotguns
Hi Art_Colector,
I was planning to buy a new Modern o/u for trap shooting for a 2 reasons:
1) Low budget (intend to spend 25-30K) on the gun
2) First timer- i have no experience in buying secnd hand guns and i dont knw anyone who could help me with it.So decided a new gun would be better.
Would you recommend this is as a good buy? I read about the Green and Co gun too. Is that a good alternative and do they manufacture o/u? Also, wht is the difference between a extractor and an ejector? Are they really helpful and work fine in indian shot guns?

Hi SS,
Green & Company manufactures only side by side guns. They do not make any O/U..... For that matter none of the gun manufacturers from Munger make O/U guns.
O/U guns are made only in Jammu......Modern & Mehar Singh both make O/U. ..... There are others makers too but modern is supposed to be the best...Modern guns are non ejector while mehar singh makes ejector DBBL Guns...but are O/U guns still being manufactured I have no clue.....

Thanks AC,
Just wanted to know if an 'ejector' is an important enough factor to consider before buying a 12 gauge shotgun? Specially the indian make, are they reliable?

Hello,
I am new to this forum. Are there any really good, professionally managed, with right hardware/machinery production units for shotguns in India? What is holding up the industry to produce shotguns in quality & quantity?

Re: Best Quality Indian Made 12 guage shotguns
Hello SS,
I think following are the major reasons for not Indian manufacturers not making high quality guns as compared to foreign guns
1) Its very difficult get a gun license ( like in Punjab) where as any law abiding citizen in US can buy any gun ( i think they only need identification and quick background check). Due to this not too many ppl can buy guns
2) No competition from real quality guns ( mainly foreign made guns) as there is ban on importing them.
Quality comes from good market and good competition and unfortunately both of them are lacking in Gun Industry in India.
Though Indian economy has opened and everyone sees the results with better quality products but unfortunately in gun industry this progress is lacking dues to un-necessary strict controls
Cheers
Mandeep

Re: Best Quality Indian Made 12 guage shotguns
hi SS,
1. ejectors do not a firearm make. having them around is an asset. they can certainly edge out slightly jammed shells...though how many times we face that is anyone's guess. but as you undoubtedly would have discovered on a clay shoot, the very fact that you need to pick up the spent shells and throw them in the bins is an excuse not to have ejectors. i find it ruins my rhythm when i have to stoop to pick up shells between stations.
2. a good trap shooting gun, i am afraid to say, is actually beyond the budget you have set. trap guns per se are quite expensive.....not only in india but in all countries. i know of shooters who are leased trap guns from krieghoff, which they return after the season. most people in my circle use a multi choked sporter and "get away with it". yours truly himself finally shied away from the miroku mk38 he was drooling on and settled on a beretta 686e. this is in u.k. in india, it is undoubtedly different.
however, things are not truly bleak. all clubs and shooting ranges are always more than happy to rent their guns. the last rates in delhi were 50 bucks per hour for their berettas. at least, you can start , till a better opportunity presents.
as far as indian guns go, as i previously mentioned, , they are good for occasional bursts, not for regular use.
and buying second hand certainly widens your choices, reduces costs, plus saves you the bother of "breaking" a new gun into the mould.
http://www.indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?t=458 should help de mystify second hand buying.
good luck

Hi Anand,
Wht you say makes sense. Mayb i should do with the range berettas for the time being and wait till i can afford a better one.
As per indian law i will have to buy one on my license so will probably stick to an Indian make.
Cheers,
SS

Hi SS,
If you are looking for an Indian O/U to lock your licence slot, then Anand has a barely used Mehar Singh which he wouldn't mind selling.
It was offered to me on a first dibs basis but I think I will stick to finding a second hand imported SxS.
The Mehar Singh pictures can be seen in the shotgun section.
Anand, I hope I am not being presumptious here.

Mack The Knife, not at all.
ss, yes i do have a barely used mehar singh o/u that i was thinking of selling...details of the discussion in the guns wanted section.
i wouldn't mind you trying it, just to get a feel of things, even if you don'y want to buy it.....but since i'm not around, i'd feel more confortable if you did it in the prescence of a licensed, experienced IFG member. You'd agree that since i am responsible for it, i have to be careful.

Thanks Mack The Knife,
Hi Anand,
Yes i did look at the photographs of the Mehar Singh on this website It was actually the first time i'd seen and o/u indian make!! and it looks in good condition to me. ... Not to say I don't mind trying it ofcourse.
I stay in Delhi and looking to buy the gun as i stated above. Though there is only one hurdle (and not a smal one!), that I dont have a license yet. In the process for applying for one. have no clue how long it could take.
Where do you put up?
regards,
Sumit
