Thanks to all for opining on the subject. There has been a lot of talk about the recoils and planes. What I understood from the posts and other links posted, is that in O/U both the barrels are likely to recoil differently as the higher barrel is at a higher angle compared to the stock and therefore is likely to have a more pronounced upward movement.
In SxS both barrels are likely to recoil similarly due to same angle which the barrels make with the stock.
The horizontal plane of the SxS may help in field hunting where the bird will fly more in a horizontal plane. O/U with its vertical plane can help break clays, which can fly out at any angle.
Please do clarify.

Without going into any technical details and reasoning, my preference are as follows
For home defence or hunting: SXS
For sports and hunting : O/U
