NYPD seeks way to let guns 'talk' to one another

NYPD seeks way to let guns 'talk' to one another

NYPD seeks technology so that officers are alerted and dont engage each other...

NEW YORK – The New York Police Department is looking into adapting futuristic technology that would allow officers' guns to recognize one another in an effort to avoid the type of friendly fire that left a cop dead last week.

Hope they will be able to save some lives.

How very tragic that officer Omar should die at the hands of a colleague. Thanks for sharing.

Hmmmm, so you won't be able to shoot rogue cops....

Or service guns will be top priority "nickable" assets, unless they self destruct, Judge Dredd style.

(Sorry, a weekful of flu with naught but Frank Miller for company does that to you :? )

I like this suggestion:

Also, the department suggested having anti-crime officers visit and introduce themselves to officers. Officer Andrew Dunton, who fired the shots that killed Edwards, was a member of the anti-crime unit along with the two other officers at the scene.

No amount of gizmos can substitute for proper training and familiarization. To have armed officers apparently working out of the same building and not being familiar with each other should not be allowed to happen anywhere. One can talk about procedures requiring deadly force, but if these people had recognized each other this would be a non-issue.

Of course, when you are a police officer and someone is breaking into and robbing your car it would also seem this could have been prevented by having a secure parking area!
