HELP in selecting a Digital Camera

Post by shadowphaxone » Sat Mar 14, 2009 9:48 pm

Hi,

Let me tell you all my problem briefly. Well, to start with, the pictures posted by me are of horrible quality since I'm not a photographer and therefore don't have a camera. All pics related to me taken either by my relatives or friends. The only thing close enough to be recognized as a camera in my current possession is my 1.3 Mega Pixel N3230 mobile phone. SO................HERE IS THE THING..........

I have INR 17,000 that i just got from my parents for buying a digital camera on the occasion of my relatives marriage. The condition is that it should be able to not only produce good pictures, but also quality videos. THE LAST DATE OF EXPIRY IS 18th MARCH 2009(Wednesday) , after which the amount has to be refunded and my little bro will take over the proceedings.

I have already resorted to internet. Have my eyes stuck at NIKON COOL PIX P 90 & OLYMPUS SP-590UZ and although I really don't understand the technical specifications that come with it. I urge all the IFG members who have experiences with digital camera to advice me about the above camera as well as other good models available in INDIA, either by posting here or by sending me PM.

Thank You

What is the primary application ? Macro, Wildlife, Travel, Portrait, Casual, or is it all this ? Find what kind of pics you want to take. I would say consider Canon SX10IS, Panasonic FZ28, Olympus 570UZ's successor if you are eyeing Nikon P90 category. Call me I can take you to the right places to buy your cam. PM me your cel.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

shadowphaxone ,

You have to first decide if you want a still camera or a video camera. A digital camera can take videos and a handy cam can take pics, but the quality will not be great. At your budget, none of the good digital SLRs will be available. Look at the Sony digital cameras. You should be able to get something really good. Look at the ease of operations too before you decide. My vote goes to the Sony ones.

Hello shadowphaxone,
There are many models available, at your budget you could go for 8 or 10 megapixel camera with video recording.
There are some models which operate on pencil cell (AA size Battery) this will be convenient and you could carry spare batteries as well. Which saves you the hassles of charging the NI-CD batteries.
Also consider the PRICE with bill and Grey-market price, along with the WARRANTY offered by different Manufacturers, and the availability of an Authorized Service Center near your area.
NIKON, CANON and PANASONIC are Good brands to choose from.

All the Best for your DIGITAL camera.
Thanks

THANK YOU fantumfan2003, raj, Prabhath, sagar & sudesh and all who replied to me via PM's. I basically understand from all your posts that it is better to go for Nikon, OLYMPUS(not readily available as they don't have authorized dealers or service centers) or Sony with 5 Mega pixels or more. I will try to keep in mind all of your suggestions. I am compelled to choose a camera that would be readily available for purchase (& also have an authorized service center) in my state. I'll post again when i have made the purchase.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN !!! :D :D :D  :D :D :D
