Two questions

1.Do weight lifting shoes help when doing a squat?

2.Any idea of a company that sells them?

They actually are meant to provide stability and friction (non-slip). They have a hard leather sole with little or no padding and a slightly raised heel. More here:

Edit: Seems I am a generation behind now :) I see that modern weight lifting shoes have evolved and they now have considerable comfort features like rubber sole and padding etc. Quite different from the desi stuff we used.

Nike makes some good cross trainers you may use for lifting too. They need to be flat and have a good grip.

Yes. The weight lifting shoes with a raised heel really help in the squat style technique where the trunk is vertical, the hips/knees/ankles fully flexed and the heel bone raised a bit.

Adidas

If you want to buy those shoes for yourself penpusher , then please be careful about your spine . I would recommend a lumbar belt while you do weight lifting/training . Warming up before hand is mandatory !!

Management of Sports injuries and knowledge about appropriate foot wear and prostheses is a part of Orthopaedic curriculum.

I completely disagree Sir.

Remember it is the calculated heel raise of the weight lifting shoe that facilitates the squat. If a person is over weight then there are other forms of slimming exercises/sports available, not this.

RP.

PS. I treat busted discs too .

Obese people with a big "anterior personality curve" ( a big belly) have lax/poorly toned abdominal musculature, there by stressing out the spine more ( poor paraspinal muscles too) while lifting weights, straining during squats etc . The inter vertebral discs and ligaments thus get prone to injury, more so with increasing age.

So before lifting weights, one needs proper toning up of abdominal and paraspinal musculature. A decrease in body weight/mass is desirable too. Swimming/brisk walking/running on soft soil /dietary regulation etc come in handy.

RP.

I am not fat though could be firmer around the waist. But then who is really satisfied :D Going by my weight,I am over weight according to some estimates but all right according to others.BMI comes out very high. However my hip to waist ratio is below the max recommended.

Thanks for the replies. Was thinking of buying them if they help with the posture in squats and dead lifts. The desi stuff is not very comfortable.I have large feet and my size is never readily available.

Doc, do use a belt when working out with weights.See lots of people who don't but should.

One should use a lumbar belt while sitting or standing working out with weights especially if one is lifting over head or straining or bending forwards . While you are supine on the bench doing bench press or pull overs , you do not require a belt.

@penpusher

If budget isn't a constraint you should go in for imported stuff. My suggestion is not to compromise on this type of equipment as its your back and your knees/ankles at stake. So quality matters. Two of my personal choices in this regard would be Otomix Lifting Shoes and Valeo Lifting belts. Do check them out on the internet. Locally there are several importers who bring in this stuff (speaking of Delhi), one I dealt with some years ago was 'Impex' based out of Malviya Nagar.

EDIT:

Not a doctor moi, but I'll say this. Free (read body-weight only) squats can be performed with a Reebok/Nike medicine ball sandwiched between your back and the wall and it would provide great back support and keep your posture consistent(which is a must).

If you plan to hit the gym though, I would suggest you use the 'Squat Sled' or a 'Smith Machine' for squats. It would keep you safe and you would'nt require a spotter(mostly) if you're not using weights more than 120 kgs.

OUP,

Thanks for the information.I am not starting now, rather was looking for something better than the usual running shoes for moving onto heavier weights.

After switching over to a vegetarian diet,I am finding it a bit of a struggle making up the protein requirement.Don't believe in taking protein shakes and stick to getting proteins from my diet.

Guys...squatting shoes have flat soles unless otherwise someone has a problem with balance, he/she is recommended raised heels...when I mean balance..these individuals tend to break at the knee more than with the hip at bottom of the movement and begin to lean forward defeating the very purpose of the squat ie. involving every part of the quad and hamstring/butt muscles...yet in this sport..the type of shoe is purely personal...I use a shoe that covers the ankle and has a flat synthetic sole that is not too hard ..so that my feet assumes its natural bed in position through out starting from warm up and ending with my 1RM max..using a belt is like using a crutch...it helps stabilize the spine when using heavy to very heavy weights...better to start of with lighter weights emphasizing more on form than anything else...for maintaining muscle only 0.38 x bodyweight (kgs) is enough...Raw squats are are squats performed without lifting gear such as knee wraps, pressure suits, belt etc., and as OUP suggested, imported stuff is better...I prefer INZER ...if it is serious weight lifting that you are into...avoid the smith machine...your body must form what is called the Q angle when the squat is performed..in other words your natural upward rise from breaking parallel...and always use a spotter while squatting...whether light or heavy..he will be the best person to know whether you are breaking clean ...and please remember...it is important that every set will have to be performed to failure...or to momentary muscular failure....
