Any members know the formalities (& paper work) that one has to go through at the Delhi airport to bring in a 2 month old puppy. My cousin lives is Germany is willing to bring in a rhodesian ridgeback pup for us.

IMPORT OF DOMESTIC PETS IN INDIA

Domestic pets like dog, cat, birds, etc. can be brought in by tourists of whether foreign or Indian origin but import of animals or birds is governed by strict health certificate regulations, which should be fulfilled.

Clearance of one dog and other domestic pets, like cats and birds in a limited number may be allowed without Import Trade Control restrictions on furnishing the following health certificate to the customs authorities:

A health certificate from a veterinary officer authorised to issue a valid certificate by the Government in the country of export to the effect that the dog imported is free from Aujossky’s disease, Distemper, Rabies, Leishmaoiasis and Leptospirosis and in the case of cats from Rabies and Distemper.

In the case of import of dogs and cats originating from countries where Rabies infection is known to exist, health certificate containing a record of vaccination, vaccine used, brew of the vaccine and the name of the production laboratory and to the effect that the dog/cat was vaccinated against Rabies more than one month, but within 12 months prior to actual embarkation with nervous tissue vaccine or within 36 months with chicken embryo both the vaccines having previously passed satisfactory potency tests.

Domestic pets like dogs, cats, birds etc. can be brought into India by a passenger coming to India subject to producing an health certificate from an authorised Veterinary Officer to the following effect:


Pet: Dog

Health certificate: To the effect that the pet is free from Aujossky's disease, Distemper, Rabies, Leishmaoiasies and Leptospirosies.

It should also contain a statement mentioning that the dog / cat was vaccinated against Rabies more than one month, but :
- within twelve (12) months prior to actual embarkation with nervous tissue vaccine; or
- within thirtysix (36) months with chicken embryo, and that both the vaccines having previously passed satisfactory potency tests.

thank you TenX, much appreciated... With all the paperwork & health certificate in hand, I presume one can just walk through customs with the pup without putting the pup in quarantine..

Guess so... I am trying to contact a friend of mine who imports dogs regularly, a dog-dealer that he is. Unfortunately, his number has changed

In my opinion, the airline should be contacted first because they have certain requirements of dog transport, in terms of the dog-cage, etc. A special box is required, with adequate locks and such. They may also guide you on how the dog should be checked in (probably at a different terminal/counter), and how the feeding, etc should be carried out. They also suggest some dogs be sufficiently tranquilized, in case they run into manics owing to the flight journey...

I wouldnt tranquilize the dog. Not reccomended by vets.
But do let us know how it goes.
Seems like it is a lot easier to bring a dog into India than take one out...

The info that TenX has provided should be enough. In simpler words, all you need are all the relevant papers of the puppy(health certificates, pedigree etc). Make sure that you have a letter from the breeder of the puppy indicating that it is being sent as a gift to you. This is only to avoid as much duty as possible. Also, make sure that you have the transfer forms from the breeder and retain the luggage slip and other paper work from the airlines which will enable you to get it registered with KCI(Kennel Club Of India) here. Without the luggage slip, it will not be possible to get it registered here. Once the puppy has landed, it will have to be taken to a vet who will then issue a health certificate which should take you an hour or so. You can also contact the local kennel club in your city and they will further be able to clear your doubts. Assuming that you are from Delhi, the contact no of the Delhi Kennel Club is 0113241028. Always wanted ridgebacks, its the temperament, their intelligence, what they were bred for, my affinity for Africa. They will also keep our property clear of bluebulls (nilgai) & jackals which are a menace where I live.

I am told police forces in some countries while training Ridgebacks (they are excellent guard dogs too) to attack a 'intruder'(police officer) with padded protection would bite where the 'intruder' was not protected. This is not the case with gsd, dobes, rotties.
