Majority of general public do not know much about how exactly the guns work and they take whatever is shown in movies. I have few friends who were existed about shooting and thought they had good idea how the gun works and feels when its shot. They had their biggest surprise when they felt recoil and they never knew about it.

Actually the scope bit is not entirely correct. Any decent long range shooter, will have the ballistic charts for his given load, and would be able to adjust the scope in a matter of seconds to allow him/her to place the cross hairs exactly where they want.

On the sideways bit... I suspect its blingy... though possible with sufficient practise using point shooting techniques...

BTW an interesting tid bit... it is still possible to buy .303 ball ammo (surplus) that is loaded with cordite. I personally dont have any, but have seen some on the various boards...
You can even see it on Box O'Truth..

What gets my goat is people curving bullets, or shooting soup cans at one mile with a cold barrel.
