It says 'this guy comes within hairs of blowing his own head off with a 50cal...', but I dont understand what happened exactly...

Seems the bullet/pellet ricocheted, bounced off the ground and hit him in the head....on his ear muffs or whatever!

Ricocheted off, but from where... seems like he shot into infinite space :)

Very difficult to say, but what I noticed is - a gap of 2 seconds when this guys fires and "SOMETHING" hits him back.

Certainly its not the 50 Cal bullet.

my theory is that on the other side of the range there was some other guy trying out the same stunt!! highly unlikely..

what could have happened is that a stray bullet from somewhere else landed in front of him and then reflected of the ground and hit his ear muff.

very interesting, what can it be?

after the shot is fired, there is a splat in the front of the bench and then the ear muffs is hit.

it may be that the blast from the muzzle hit/picked up a stone and hit the ear muff,

they did not show the ear muff in details, as a round would have done some damage to it.

Somehow, why I felt the whole thing was confusing was because the person looked like he was a complete pro at what he was doing ...

Freak richochette.

You're typically shooting metal plates at ranges between 500 and 1500 yards with the .50 BMG.
