68-year-old former Indian Space Research Organisation employee sustained a bullet injury to his throat after a licensed pistol reportedly misfired at the hands of a four-year-old boy in Peenya police station limits on Monday morning. The incident occurred at the residence of KM Muniaraju, a former corporator from Dasarahalli and a realtor when his grandson was playing with his licensed firearm. The victim identified as Govindappa, a resident of Chokkasandra was visiting Muniraju and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.
According to police Govindappa, along with S Muniraju and Raju returned to Muniraju's residence from a function. Muniraju removed his pistol from its holster and kept it on a swing when he went to wash his face and his grandson reportedly spotted the unattended pistol and started playing with it.
According to the police all three of them saw the child near the firearm but neither cautioned nor removed the pistol from him. They were seated next to the boy on the second floor of the building chatting and reading newspapers when the firearm misfired and the bullet pierced Govindappa's throat. However, according to Raju, an eyewitness to the incident, the firearm was kept on a swing and misfired when it fell down after the child pushed the swing. "We immediately rushed him to Sparsh Hospital as he was bleeding profusely," said Raju.
DCP (North) TR Suresh said that the entire incident has been captured on CCTV installed in the house. The police also said that the safety catch of the firearm was not on and there was a bullet in its chamber when it accidentally went off when the child was playing with it. Meanwhile, hospital authorities said that Govindap-pa was kept under observation and will undergo a surgery.
"The bullet entered from the right side and there is an exit wound on the left side. He has not suffered any major internal organ injury," said Chinnadurai R, critical care specialist, Sparsh Hospital where Govindappa is undergoing treatment
