Battle of Isandlwana-the Indian conection
Battle of Isandlwana-the Indian conection
Here is something interesting, the 24th regiment that had faced the Zullus at the Battle of Isandlwana had faced an almost similar fate at the battle of Chillianwalla when asked to bayonet charge a Sikh artillery battery.Perhaps they had the same officers leading them both times. At least the incompetence was the same.Read the complete details at http://www.battlefields.co.za/history/a ... knight.htm

Hi penpusher
This sounds just like Custer's stand at Littlebighorn battle where he for his own Glory and ego felll upon the Indian Village, grosslu understimating the enemy and was routed.... Now his regiment/cavalry was either 1 or 7 Cav... eons later in Vietnam 450 soldiers were helicoptered into a zone unbeknown to any one right next to Vietcong Div HQ.. http://www.lzxray.com/ This was also picturized in book and movie " We were soldiers once" link to custer regiment... one of the units was 7 Cav.. I remember Mel Gibsons dialogue ( acting as CO of regiment) if he was to meet the same fate as that of Custers.. thanks to technology and maybe better soldiering this time regiment redeemed itself.. but did loose lot of soldiers nevertheless were not annihilated
Well it was win - win situation for both sides in Vietnam, Vietcong learned how to deal with Heloborne troops after loosing thousands of soldiers and US guys felt they won because 400 odd soldiers engaged a bigger force and heliborne troops an expeirmental in the operation became standard modus operandi..
I think some indian regimnents also have the same history Saragarhi 12 Sept 1897 21 soldiers of 36 Sikh regiment in Afghanistan.. 4 Rajput stand in Indo China war, I guess Indo Chin war can also be related to in competence of generals who bowed down to political pressures..

Re: Battle of Isandlwana-the Indian conection
that was the 7th calvary regiment, now part of the 1st cavalry division, their regimental music is "the garryowen"
and "garryowen" is still used as a "verbal salute" between menbers and veterans of the 7th cavalry, as we marines use "semper fi" or long form "semper fidelis."
and for the histoy buffs here's a medely of cavalry songs, "she wore a yellow ribbon", " the girl i left behind me" and "garryowen" from a john wayne film about the 7th cavalry.
