Most of You May not Know this!

Post by brihacharan » Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:27 am

When you lift the phone you normally say Hello...
Do you know what is the real meaning of Hello?

It is the name of a Girl..! Yes it is.
Do you know who this girl is?

"Margaret Hello"

She was the girlfriend of Graham Bell who invented telephone.
His first word on his phone after his invention was "Hello".
That practice of starting the call with Hello still continues...Even today!
One can forget the name of Graham Bell but not his girlfriend....
That is what he did for his beloved.
"HELLO" are you listening???

Dear Briha,

Can you cite any reference for this ?

My internet searches show that A G Bell's companion was Mabel Gardiner Hubbard,
a hearing impaired woman. Her father was the financial backer of the telephone
project and the first president of Bell Telephone Company.
A man should have a hobby. It keeps him out of trouble.

Actually, we old telephone people know the true story. Bell preferred "Ahoy" for a phone answering greeting.

"Hello" came from Edison:

Perhaps we should stop using "hello" for that reason, and use whatever Tesla thought best!

Whether it was the telephone or Edison, JP Morgan ended up owning both, but at least Bell retained his dignity. Edison's career famously included electrocuting elephants.

It gets quite complicated with regards to the technical aspects of what is now considered rudimentary voice transmission by electrical current and how they combine with the legal requirements of a patent.

In the end, Meucci may have made electromagnetic voice transmission work, but his financial problems, lack of clarity in patent application descriptions, and expiry of documents that needed to be filed to secure a patent mean that his claims weren't substantiated.

Grey's patent documentation was not considered to be descriptive enough of the things that Bell did to achieve electromagnetic voice transmission. Still, there were aspects of what Bell did that resembled what Grey had described that were sufficient to bring challenges to Bell's being awarded a patent.

I think it is reasonable to say that Bell is the inventor of the telephone, but others were "hot on the trail" of a workable device at the same time, and in Meucci's case, even before. Bell was able to satisfy the legal requirements for a patent and the others were not, but legally and technically, this wasn't "black and white": there were gray areas (no pun intended), and you know that there are always lovers of conspiracy theories that thrive on these sorts of things.

This sort of stuff gets into the realm of "who was first to discover America," etc. I wouldn't worry about it unduly.

Thanks for sorting that out.
