Re: Caliber query
Nope, it is NPB. The list of restricted calibres has not been changed in the past 50+ years. The ONLY 7.62 cartridge which is under restricted category is the 7.62 x 51 aka 7.62 NATO which is the round used by the SLR and LMG etc.
Anyhow, Marksman's query can only be an academic exercise as there is no availability of 7.62x39 arms OR for that matter ammo - in the civilian market... unless his uncle happens to be the Prime Minister of India!
Cheers!

Re: Caliber query
sigh..... the only arms and ammo available to the common man of india are effectively .32 acp,.22lr, and iof revolver 's and ammo. the price of.380 acp arms and ammo is too damn high and even tokarev ammo costs 200 a pop. irony for a weapon that was built to be cheap. .
unless you have a PB license , these (baby) calibres and substandard arms are all you can be satisfied with at present
the 9mmA1(PB) manufactured by IOF is very good though.
